Just saw this magnificent film last night ... one of the greatest civil rights statements ever made. Harvey Milk should be considered in the same company as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi ... a true courageous hero who changed this world for the better, and paid for it with his life.
Best,
Fred

I'll have to pick up the book, thanks Gary. I think in films they don't want to overwhelm people so didnt put in all the other political stuff. To me the importance of the film wasn't the accuracy, but the outright shock of the event. I watched TCM and saw the documentary on gays in hollywood, and it's pretty shocking that for 60+ years gays were portrayed as murderers or suicidal deviants.
I can't remember the film I saw last year but 3 important side characters were melded into one. I didn't know that till my friend told me after the movie, he was outraged, lol.
Wagner did lots of futzing around with the real tale for dramatic purposes. So did Wilde for Salome', all to great effect.
Like Picasso painting Gurtrude Stein, she objected that it wasn't realistic and his comment was "it will look like you" And that's what people remember.

Oh Garland, too much Garland. But I just bought a Dusty in Memphis CD that has even more bonus tracks, it goes on forever. I haven't heard her in decades but I was at Amoeba where they have EVERYTHING. I was a Beatles/ Zep/Hendrix fan in 60s Philly. But once in a while down in the basement I'd put on Dusty or Judy Collins my sister had and be enticed by the feminine anima.
Tho Garland in that film coming down the stairs in black hat, jacket and shorts singing Come on Get Happy, such a thrill and show stopper. One friend said if you really want to tear your heart out, listen to the last recording she did and croaks Over the Rainbow in her drug/alcohol haze. Just get a knife and end it all. It's too painful to bear.
Which reminds me of a happier note, this summer if anyone is in town, the Hollywood Bowl is going to screen The Sound of Music with live orchestra and 20,000 fans singing along. You can't miss it. Give up those Pink Floyd tickets this will curl your toes.

Oh my God! The biggest gayfest since Mardi Gras. Better book my flight tickets now and dust off that Mother Superior outfit. After all, Sister E is just a convent girl gone to waste!

Anything like the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence?
Ack! No wonder the conservatives are on a witch hunt with those guys running around. They just weird me out at festivals and I cringe on seeing them on TV.
Well there's no music this afternoon with machinery going on in the next apartment, must be prepping it for a new tenant. Like a little belt sanding with your Emmylou Harris?
