Just been hypnotised by Derren Brown...

...and it was really spooky.
He made me forget my own name, and the number 7. And then made me think a glass of water was vintage Bollinger.
It was all tremendous fun though and he has great charisma. I've watched a few of his programmes but this happened because I visited the Channel 4 website last Monday (to find out when the Blunkett programme was on "More4") and there was a link to a Derren Brown page which encouraged people to apply for his next TV thing. So, on impulse, I did.
They phoned me on Thursday to come along this evening and the above is what happened. He whittled around 100 down to 20. Apparently I'm "suggestible", so I'm through to the "next round". Whatever that is. I'll keep you posted.
But I can say I had always thought hypnotism was largely nonsense, and now I am quite convinced the other way.
Stiff drink called for!

So there's no 7?
Oh well.

Apparently neither of these for very long.

Indeed. He returned these mysterious powers nearly immediately after taking them. Phew
Y'know, I mightn't have subscribed to losing the ability to count if the name thing had retained hints of being permanent.
But I swear it was funny. I knew something was missing when I counted my fingers from 1 to 11, but I really didn't know what it was. Someone else was asked to name the book/film "Snow White and the..."
The best they could manage was "...Dwarf"
The curious thing was the degree to which he debunked the thing really, he said that no-one can ever be hypnotised unless they allowed themselves to be. I really think I could have stopped it, at any time. I just chose not to.
Two years ago I stopped smoking by the simple expedient of not smoking again. Which worked, albeit not without difficulty. Now I'm beginning to regret not having had hypnosis to have achieved this somewhat earlier than I did.

There goes another illusion. I thought hypnotists chose their victims at random. Isn't this all rather frowned upon by the trade? I remember hearing all sorts of stories about after-effects concerning those subjected to such public performances? BTW: What exactly is a 7?

If Derren Brown can make a success of debunking hypnosis he could put the likes of Paul McKenna out of business - so there's always a silver lining to every cloud!
Rod, I'm looking forward to seeing you on television, unless I am mysteriously hypnotised into thinking you are Adam Meredith...

I went to see one of his shows in Reading a while ago and it was very entertaining. He had some people up on stage doing the whole medium / seance thing - pretty cool. I think they were more freaked out than we were at the things they were "seeing"!
The way he picked people by chucking a frisbee around and having the first person it landed on throw it over their shoulder put paid to any thoughts of audience plants so how he manages to do his stuff is beyond me!
I have to say I think it would be fascinating to be hypnotised by him, but I'm just not the type to apply for TV shows so all power to you Rod

The guy fascinates me, and I love his TV progs. He is a very clever showman, magician and mathemetician, with a highly trained memory.
I do believe though that 'entertainment' hypnotism can be mentally dangerous, and personally, would not go anywhere near the guy. Participants of stage hypnotism have reported not being 'right' since the event.
Up to you Rod, but be careful.
John.

A few years back I was at a hypnotist's show in Dublin. It was very entertaining if a little scary.
The last thing that the participants had to do involved a leprechaun that they were each holding that would disappear as soon as they left the building.
No-one was injured in the mellee that ensued when relatively sane people then ran frantically around the streets in search of their lost leprechaun. A number of car drivers had to brake rapidly though.
I was not aware of any pre-selection of the participants.

Yeah, isn't your name Kevin?

I'm still here and have not gone mad(der).
I've just been away in France for a couple of days. During which the production company did phone me up and ask whether I was available on particular days in the next few weeks. But they also said they were asking these questions of more people than they need for the programme, so nothing definite.
It has occurred to me since that I absolutely cannot "do" halloween, although no mention has been made of this, or of it being broadcast live.
No more hypnotism involved we were assured last Sunday.
Given that it worked on me, I would now be sceptical of allowing myself to be hypnotised in the future by anyone who did not have something clearly to lose if it went wrong, and where there were not others present. I didn't have any issue with trusting the guy, and it was good to meet him.
Cheers
Kevin
No wine tonight - a bit of a detox. Might have some 8up instead.

Well they want me...
This Sunday and Monday in an hotel at some mystery location (they are "sending a car") and then coming to film me at work next week. Lawks.
I am getting a bit unnerved about it, but it is rather exciting.
As dear old Fritz would perhaps comment "I can't say too much at this stage".
But it's because I don't know.
I shall of course probably end up on the cutting room floor, but I hope not literally.
Wish me luck!
Rod (I think)
3, 2, 1, - you're back in the room...
