Naxo and Snaxo

Posted by: gusi on 27 July 2003

Hello,

A used isobarik Naxo has come up for sale and I was wondering if this beast it the same thing as a Snaxo.

If not, is there a big difference?

cheers

Hi
There is a big difference between a NAXO and a SNAXO (the SNAXO is a Super NAXO).
Don't be put off by this however as the NAXO sounds fine, I had one of each at one time and sold the SNAXO as I prefered the sound of the NAXO (on reflection I may not have given the SNAXO long enough to burn in but there was a big difference between them).
Regards
Jim

Mark, Monkfish,

Thanks for your replies, I'll make an offer on the NAXO.

I am a bit confused about the cables now.

By my reckoning I'd need:
1 Pre-Naxo
1 hicap-Naxo
3 Naxo-250s
Is that right? Should all these cables be included?

Interesting that one 250 drives the left center and base, another the right center and bass, and the last one the tweeters.

Why is that? I expected horizontal partitioning, ie 1 250 for the bass, 1 for the mids etc. Is it related to the timing?

cheers

Gusi -

The connection for an active Tri-amp is:

pre - Hicap 1 (or any other Naim PS)

HiCap1 - HiCap 2

HiCap 2 - NAXO

3 x 4-pin DIN/XLR from NAXO, one to each 250.

IIRC, The sharing of the mid/bass on each 250 is something to do with the drain on the power supplies in each amp being minimised this way round.

Naim can, apparently, alter NAXOs to be split horizontally in the way you describe (makes setting up an active system far easier) Wink

HTH,

Cheers,

Tim

Gus,

By the sounds of it then the NAXO shouldn't come with any cables because the XLRs come with the 250s and the snaic with the Hicap.

Thanks Guys,

I didn't realise you could run from one hicap to the next.

The only decision now is whether to buy an un-resalable box. But as about half the people reckon that the naxo sounds better than the snaxo that might be ok.

The final (famous last words) upgrade would be a single s/h 500 so upgrading the naxo is a non issue.

Jens,

no, there is a SNAIC-4 cable included with the NAXO or SNAXO.

The is reqd for connecting the two HiCaps (or whatever).

For this reason, three way SNAXOs were optimized for DBLs and NBLs at the time of manufacture (not Isobariks). If you get a SNAXO you will need to have it modified by Naim to make it work properly with (Briks). I have been told that NBL SNAXOs are closer to being optimal with Briks than DBL SNAXOs are (but would still require some adjustments by Naim).

Mark,

when you order a SNAXO, you must specify which speaker it is to drive, and they will then build it.

You are quite correct, though, that the (S)NAXO must be build or re-built for the correct speaker.

BTW, SNAXO/SuperCap can be run with either a SNAIC5 or a Burndy. The burndy is a very nice upgrade, though!

Jim,

when I got my DBLs, I only had the Isobarik NAXO (which was sonically rather weird, but quite safe for the drive units).

When the SNAXO arrived, I was a bit surprised that it seemd to lose a bit of the excitement of the NAXO. Others that I trust have said that the SNAXO was an unexpectedly big jump.

Hmm, may have to try this one again - system has moved on a long way since then, and the SNAXO had just undergone surgery to configure it for DBLs instead of NBLs.

cheers, Martin

Guys,

Thanks for all your answers.

I just paid for the Naxo. I'll let you know how good it sounds when I can afford two more 250s.

How important is it to get them precisely matched? Will any 3 250s of the same make do, ie chrome bumper or olive or should they be within a few years. Second hand buyers could have to wait a long time for the right vintage to come along.

Can you buy these Hi-Hi cables separately? I don't think that it was included. Is a SC-Hi cable the Hi-Hi Snaic4?

cheers
