should i get a new cdp
Posted by: minime on 29 December 2003
i have owned a avi cd ref 2000 for 8 mnths this unit was fully serviced by avi just before purchase it's 98 vintage but i was assured by avi it had had v. little use and was in tiptop condition.
now this player killed my cd 3.5/flatcap dead in every dept so i sold them.
this is contary to what i have read on this forum.
the naim cdp and power supply were both 99 vintage and in good working order .
i have the upgrade bug again
so what would be a worthwhile upgrade over my existing player.
i use primare amps/jmlabs spks.
thanks

If you have been to the CD3.5/FC before and have sold them for something you belive is better, then there is little point exploring CD5. Have you tried the legendary Meridian 200/203? If you haven't already, and are obviously not joined to Naim gear at the hip like most of us here, then you should investigate. You can get a good one for around £500 if you shop around, and rumour has it that it would rival a CDS2 in some departments. May be worth a try. This is just what I've read here of course and have no personal experience. I would if I was more open minded

thanks for the replies
your right john 8 months is not a long time
it's just "the itch"
maybe a new power cord instead
temptation temptation .

I think you need to look and ask elsewhere.
You preferred the AVI to your 3.5/FC and you're using Primare amps.
Maybe the Naim sound just isn't for you?
Such heresy is barely tolerable hereabouts; but we wish you well with your search I'm sure.

For PRquote:
I’ve just heard another shite sounding system costing ££££££’s fronted with a CDS3
Another? - More than one?
Can you give us details of the rest of the systems, without exposing the owners and tell us why these systems failed to satisfy?
This is interesting stuff; because I realise that (personal feelings aside) it is much more difficult to make an expensive system 'work'.
The room plays a big part in this of course. I'll take a well set up budget Naim system in a good sounding room, over a high-end one in a crap sounding room anytime.
Or are there other reasons that these expensive systems did not play music for you?

You're right. I have heard many systems that are supposed to be miles beyond mine (incl CDS3/552/500/NBL at a dealer), but my CD3.5/FC in my system (OK - it's a mullet), in my room, with attention to detail and setup, just excites me every time. I really am extremely happy with mine. The key is getting what you have working as it should.
I have a mate with CD3.5/42.5/110/Audiosomethingorother speakers, and he has been emailing me about the CD's he has been playing this holiday, and the things he has been hearing!!. It's a really basic system, but he just loves it to death - it's wonderful.

I like to play it real loud, but it sounds like a PA. Not an audiophile album by any means. Yeah...crap just about sums it up. Have you tried Feeder - Turn off Echo Park? Man...this is so fuzzy it's embarassing. Fantastic track though - all time top ten.

It makes me wonder what people are listening too at home?
PR - Some more info would be useful. This is clearly someone's home system. What was it doing right and wrong for you?
Do you think thet the room or the supports are at fault; or are you an 'Olive' man?
