I got the new album as I like the single 'Shine It All Around'.
The rest of it is pants - Avoid!

Does it compare to any previous album in particular. I allways need to give his stuff a lot of spins to do it justice, but I avoided the last one - the reviews put me off. My loss?

Got it on vinyl Saturday - Personally I think it is the best he has ever put under his own name. There are a lot of Led Zep echoes in the guitar and drum sounds and the usual North African rhythms - but on balance a very good effort. It is a grower give it time.

What I have heard is pretty painful; it was album of the week on Radio 2 a while back and I could not believe how pretentious Mr Plant is. Mate, you are a rock singer in a once good band but you are not some high brow philosopher - please shut up!! Sorry rant over!!

dont lke him then woody!

I think this is a very representative assessment of Mighty Rearranger.
While I loved "Shine it all around" on the first listen, the rest of the album didn't impress. However a two hour car journey allowed me to give it a better appraisal and it now grows on me with every listen. The exception is the third track which I just can't get into.
My Percy favourite is Fate of Nations.

manic nirvana is also a fave of mine

There is a 3 page feature on Robert Plant in the new Radio Times.
The album still isn't doing it for me.

I played it a couple of times last night. This is my first solo Plant CD and I have to say that I think this is very good. May now be tempted to get some other stuff.
Good tunes and very high quality band. Particularly love track 5, an acoustic number - All the King's Horses. I have found it easy to get into.
Recommended.

We've got tickets for WOMAD - he's performing on Friday 29th July. The album - I like it! My wife bought it for me on CD unaware there was a vinyl version. Hmm... do I really need it in two formats? A good test for the CD5 and LP12 though!

I agree with everyone who says it's the best thing he's done since Zep. An absolute stunner, and I find it refreshing that a 56 year old has decided not to rest on his laurels and to keep questing.
Good on you mate! (New Order, please take note, you useless embarassing bastards).
K
PS Did anyone hear the Scala concert that was recently broadcast on Radio 2? Teriffic stuff, well worth getting, it's freely available for download from any good bit torrent site...

I bought Mighty Rearranger yesterday after hearing tracks on the radio and seeing him on Later. Needless to say, its a completely different experience through the NAIM system. I gave it a couple of spins last night accompanied by a cold Guinness. It is absolutely superb. Its playing again this morning and its a safe bet to top the end of year polls.

I tried guys; I really did. My copy is off to the second hand CD shop next week as part of a mass clear out, in one of my CD purges.
If nothing else, this thread proves that it's dodgy to recommend (or otherwise) music to others.

I would agree with that,
I have listened to the CD a few times and for me its one of the best CD's he has done.

I haven't got round to looking for this cd yet, but I may well do. However, I don't think the thread shows anything of the kind. I think this room of the forum would be a pretty boring place if we didn't recommend stuff to each other, in fact, it's pretty well the point of an awful lot of the threads here.
I've bought a number of discs based on recommendations from this forum (and elsewhere) and, on the whole, I've been pretty grateful.

Tam

It must be dodgy (as in unreliable) Tam, because most contributors to this thread disagreed with my opinion of the CD in question.
Perhaps you've had better experiences than me, but I've bought CD's in the past on the strength of a written rave review, and been decidedly disappointed. The indefinable enigma of music I guess?
That said; this is as you say a great place to chat about music, which is of course the reason we have all this expensive hardware.
I generally post positively about new musical discoveries - there's just no guarantee that anyone else will be similarly delighted by it.
Bob Harris' Friday and Saturday shows on Radio 2, continue to provide me with new musical stimulation, and Bob's playlists and artist information lead to web-sites with further info and samples to listen to.
How ever did I survive without the internet?
John.

John,
I have had some bad experiences. I can think of a few well reviewed albums that I've found to be terrible.
I think I misunderstood your point (i.e. that it can be it and miss). I thought you were suggesting we should make, or buy, on recommendations, which, I think would be a shame.
That said, on the whole, I can't think of anything I've got from a recommendation here that I've disliked. And only one cd that I hated that was well reviewed (but I'd have bought that even without the reviews.......).
I think recommendations are pretty essential (it's a good way to find new things, and musically that's something I'm always on the look out for). It isn't always going to be a success but it's worthwhile nonetheless.
How did we survive without the internet? Indeed. Probably similarly to how we survived before mobile phones were invented. Having said that, the internet is decidedly more useful.
regards,
Tam
