And now, the speakers

Posted by: David O'Higgins on 17 September 2001

I have now arrived at the following setup:

LP 12, Ekos, Lyra Clavis, Armageddon, Prefix/Hi.
CDS 2
NAC 52
NAT 03
Headline /Hi
2 x 135.

Supports include Mana, AAvik and Nordost Points.

I think it is time to consider speakers/ cables. Any suggestions, up to a limit of say £4,000 ? Room is approx 20' x 12' and speakers cannot be placed against the wall. High WAF required, together with very controlled bass.

Spendor, Dynaudio, Naim, Shahinian, ATC, etc. As you can see, the list will not be short. smile

Ultimately, you're going to have to go out and listen to speakers, trying to find something that has the basic sonic personality that you expect. Then get the dealer to bring them by your house, so that you can try them with your gear.

The proprietor of a local shop here in Toronto (Applause Audio and Art) believes that the amp/speaker interface is crucial. When I was asking to hear speakers, he suggested that I bring my pre+power to his shop for testing. If we found something that we liked, then we could truck the speakers back to my place. This is something you might want to consider, as it shows dealers that you're a serious customer, and it helps you to quickly determine whether the speakers are up your alley.

To David Scott.

Od course I'm not that saintly ! I have a pair of Eminent Technology LFT8 speakers and some transparent-audio cable but these are probably now outclassed by the rest of the system although they sound pretty good. They are hybrids with a panel for mid/top and a conventional base unit, and my wife hates them!

(I also have a pair of Sennheiser HD 600)
