Help! Power outage advise needed ASAP.

Posted by: Naimed-In-NY on 14 August 2003

Hi. Big blackout in NYC and major East Coast cities in US. Power just came back on where I work, but still is out where I live. After checking that my family is fine, my thoughts have turned to my Naim stereo equipment (is this normal?). OK, here's the situation: system left on 24/7; power outage knocks out power at home; what do I do? Do I tell the Mrs. to turn off power buttons in amp before power comes back on again? Leave everything as is? If I turn everything off, is there a specific order I'm supposed to turn stuff back on? Is there any danger that my kit is damaged (gulp)? Any quick advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Naimed,

Turn off the amps first, then power supplies (hicaps, flatcaps, supercaps). If the power is out, just turn everything off. Wait until power is reliably restored, then when its time to power up, turn on the power supplies on first, wait a minute or so then amps.

Just to be on the safe side, tell her to unplug everything from the wall. I would think the sudden surge when the power comes back on can cause damage even if the everything is turned off.
This SUCKS !

Emil - I agree. This really sucks. Charles and Emil - Thanks for the prompt replies. Just called the Mrs. on the cell phone and gave her detailed instructions. I'm leaving work now and, hopefully, will find no permanent damage when power is restored at home. I hope no fellow Naimers suffer stereo (or other) damage due to this blackout.

Best regards.

I am in Southern Ontario and I have turned off the equipment while off due to the outage. Just powered it back up and all is well.

Hey Manu, must be a first: no power outage in Montreal...

Just make sure you have unplugged everything before the power comes back on. Once power is restored, then plug back in. There may be a power surge which would not be good. I always do this when the power goes out during winter storms.

However, even if you don't do this, all should be ok (unless there is a huge surge). It happened to me once that the power went off and came back on before I got home. All was ok though.

Tistram,
May be a reason why some people here call Quebec a Distinct Society.

I have some customers leaving in the country with frequent power outages, they never have problems with their Naim gears. Naim gears fear thunder, not power loss.
Maybe now you understand Chris Koster advice regarding 20 amps breakers:

" If there is a power failure, the whole thing will trip the breaker when power is restored, which is fine with me, because power failures often come in multiples, and usually when I am not home.

Chris"

Much sympathy for you guys - Here in the UK I don't remember a major/extended outage since the Miners strikes in the early '70s. I'd be absolutely stuffed - no Naim, no PC, no oven, no tea, no shower, no TV, no light. No wonder the Iraqies are rioting - they havn't had any leccy for 4 months.

Naim gear is very resilient when is comes to power outages and dips. I get frequent outages and big dips in voltage and this has never caused any headaches with the hi-fi. (knackers the PC though!).

Noel-
Given the strong recommendations to keep the gear up and running 24/7, it is comforting that the gear is resilient to power outages and dips. This was my first time having an outage knock out my relatively new Naim gear and was concerned. I'm breathing easier today (having gotten my music-on-Naim fix late last night).

Jez - parts of East Anglia were stuffed for several days due to snow etc during last winter - but if I lived at the end of an overhead power cable several miles long I would have a generator for such occasions

Any idea of the cause yet? We have had conflicting reports of:
1) Failure of transmission from Canada
2) Lightning strike on station in NY
3) Overload caused further to an incident a few days ago

Now all the above have been dismissed.
I find it hard to believe that no-one yet knows how this happened 18 hours after the event. It doesn't add up.

3-4 days after 9/11 a plane came down in Queens. Over here, we heard reports of it for 24 hours, and then nothing more. It was like it never happened. Did you have a news blackout on that too?

Rasher - the plane in Queens came down in November 2001, there was a program on the TV about it a few weeks ago -

Do a Google search on "Queens plane crash inquiry"

There is more news and comment than you really need

Basically the plane entered turbulence from a 747 ahead of it, the pilot used the rudder to correct the rapid motion of the plane and because of the stresses the tail fin broke off.

It was alledged that Airbus Industrie were aware of the potential problem but did not publicise it.

I suppose that there was a gallic shrug of the shoulders and a pouf sound

How long is it taking for the sound to come back to its usual quality...how long does it take to "warm up" after 24 hours completely off? (I have a CD5/112/150 combination with AudioPhysic Tempos)

cheers, and here's hoping that there are no more outages!

It takes about a day or so to get to the "near perfect" sound. My system was also out from the outage and it sounds great after a night powering (as it is better than no Naim). It was a shame that the electrical grid went down like this. This is a wake up call to Bush to start spend money and time on something more needed rather than making bombs.
