Seven SHM Steely Dan CDs ...............
Posted by: J.N. on 28 June 2008
............. arrived from CD Japan the other day, and I think this technology really has something.
Great clarity of sound allied to a smoother, sweeter and more spacious analogue-like presentation.
Check out new and forthcoming releases here.
Good listenin' y'all.
John.

The Cure re-issues and the P-Funk best of might be worthwhile!

Hi Dave
I use CD Japan to buy my SHM CDs.
They offer 4 types of international shipping to the UK (CD JPNs etd) ...
Express Mail Service (Usually delivered in 3-6 days after the order is shipped)
Registered Air Mail (Usually delivered in 4-12 days after the order is shipped)
Air Mail (Usually delivered in 4-12 days after the order is shipped, may take up to 8 weeks)
Economy Air (Usually delivered in 1-3 weeks after the order is shipped, may take up to 12 weeks).
Shipping cost is based on weight, & the quicker options cost more. I have used the standard Air Mail option 22 times so far & have received the order 4-6 days after shipping.
Depending on the package weight for 2 or 3 CDs this costs 800-1200 yen (£3.78 - £5.67).
This might sound expensive, but when you compare the total cost of buying SHM CDs in the UK it's a bargain IMO.
This option is also good IME because it doesn't seem to catch the attention of HMRC,
& I only buy 2 or 3 (depending on value) per order which also helps with this (none spotted so far).
Sonically I really like SHM CDs.
Best so far are the Hendrix studio album releases IMO (sadly now deleted).
Cheers - John

Doesn't absolute sound quality depend on the masters they use? Are these from the original masters or secondary copies?
I'm not impressed by the accuracy of information on the website ('Katie Lied' indeed).
How much do they work out at per CD (in £££)?

Amongst many other things yes RB.
Regarding source it varies release by release.
CD JPN do very well in terms of service IME, but they are human.
There have been similar good reports of HMV JPN.

There are several typos peppered across their website but in the main they do a very decent job. I tend to look at the title on the cdjapan website with amazon.com open in another tab to get tracklistings and reviews. The cost per head is around £13 to £14 for a single CD. Best to not order more than 2 at a time though as HMRC are liable to pounce unexpectedly.

Great supplier. Agree with Chris about ordering, don't bother with more than two. The Customs guys start twitching.
I also recommend the cheapest postage. I often find them turning up within a week to 10 days.

..Oh Lordy ......Sometimes I wish I didn't read this board ...I already have a plethora of Steely Dan stuff on a multitude of formats without being tempted by more! ......anyone know if Aja is ever going to released on SACD or (much less likely) DVD-A?
...Thanks for the info though!
