Reasonable pub/restaurant Southhampton/Porstmouth area
Posted by: BigH47 on 29 November 2009
We are off to the Brook in Portswood, Southhampton.
As the weather is not looking to good and we probably won't be walking about, we will be looking for some where to eat, on the way down.
Any recommendations for a good eatery English/Italian preferred, off the main roads between Portsmouth and Southampton.
Needs to be open from about 17:30.
TIA

Hi BigH
Try Ham Farm in Eastleigh.
It is a Harvester where you help yourself to free salad to go with your main meal.
If you order before 6pm I believe, you can get a third off their "early bird" menu.
Eastleigh is not far from the Brook - I was their on thursday seeing Aynsley Lyster.

Trevor

Southampton has some great restaurants down Oxford street near ocean village. I used to live down there and there is one I loved down there called the olive tree. Excellent European food. Nice Spanish called la regatta near the docks too! Failing that there is a great pub on the avenue into Southampton from the m3 called the cowherds. Very old pub, and very popular. Sorry don't know Portsmouth that well.
Hope this helps

Sorry just noticed you wanted somewhere in portswood but the brook is a 10 min drive from Southampton centre

No worries james if we know where we are going, the centre may not be so bad.

The problem is with portswood is that there is nothing much there apart from a couple of Indian restaurants, which aren't too bad, but that's about it

Cowherds looks like it will be OK. Thanks.

Ceno is good in Highfield Lane, Portswood, and less than half a mile to the Brook.
Best, Chris

...am reading this thread with a mixture of amusement and nostalgia. If it's the same Brook Inn that used to be my watering hole, while a Soton student in the 70's? Is it really a top music venue now? Blimey
And the Cowturds? Still going?
Just looked at the Brook website and they have some eatery recommendations if it helps
My how Southampton has changed.....
Cheers
John

If you could take a detour into the NForest near Lymington (not too far from Soton) - The Hobbler is one of my favourite pubs in the UK. Great pub, food and beer.

Cowherds proved an OK source of scoff, and the Brook an OK music venue. So all in all an OK evening, despite a migraine coming on.
Thanks to all for your comments.
