iTunes ripping too slow

Posted by: Rockingdoc on 11 July 2007

I can't work out what the problem is so any advice would be welcome.

Installed latest iTunes into a new PC and now my rip speed from commercial CDs has dropped to 1.5x - 3x at best. Using Apple lossless files. This is too slow to be useful.

PC is a fancy quad processor thingy with 2Gb RAM, and all singing/dancing CD/DVD drive/recorder.

Any ideas?

Nero7 rips and burns like the very wind on it.

I have a similar problem, it manifested it's self after a whole heap of PC problems that turned out to be a faulty RAM stick...anyway - onece I got the PC resorted with a new motherboard, etc Windows XP resorted all the new hardware but then ripping CD's with iTunes was painfully slow.

I used to get the rip speeds at around 17x or better and now it is down to 3.5x speed...I had previously tried turning error correction ON and this resulted in slow speed rips as it was resampling, I think. But now it doesn't want to return to full speed again.

A few things happened at the same time so I am none too sure what actually caused it but I have 2 WinXP installs on the same PC, both with iTunes...one rips slow the newer install rips at normal speed..go figure eh!

Doc

Have you tried the Apple Support forums? Here should do it....

Thanks, I will give that a go, but some of the brains here can often get straight to the point without wading through a sea of nonsense. The iPod forum seems to be mainly populated by under-twenties on drugs.

Well I've searched through the Apple forum, and guess what. Hundreds of people are asking the same question, but no answer.
It seems related to the new release of iTunes.

Have you tried going back to a previous version?

First thing to try is making sure you are ripping to AAC format, which is what Apple want you to do rather than MP3.
Other things to try is to delete unwanted playlists which can make things run a bit slow, and also try ripping to a new empty library folder - just to see what happens. It might again be that it's reached some kind of size buffer. You can always drag the new files over to the main folder and add them again to itunes from there.

Don't know how to do that. I assume earlier versions are overwritten, and Apple don't supply them for download?

Always rip in Apple lossless. However, my library is HUGE. I use a selection of external hard-drives, each with >200Gb of music files. Perhaps this is my problem.
Also, due to excessive/sloppy back-up technique, I have a BIG problem with duplication of music files which I haven't found an answer to, apart from deleting one at a time.

I have itunes 7 and 7.02 install files so if you want I can email them to you. (sloopjohnbat eircom.net) Other wise you could perhaps use the windows "system restore" (programs>accessories>system tools>system restore) to restore to the point before you installed the latest version of itunes.

Thanks chaps. Problem was solved by toggling "error correction" on and off a few times while ripping in progress. Back to a speedy 25x rip rate.

Apple released iTunes 7.3.1 yesterday that addresses a problem with iTunes 7.3 accessing the iTunes Library.
