HDX software update

Posted by: RR1 on 27 February 2010

Has anyone got their hands on the new software for the HDX. If so is it cd format you can load yourself or does it need to be updated at the Naim dealer. Confused

IMO I would put a product out there that does not need "fixing" later and be done with it.

Trolling a little are you Timmie Boy?

No trolling, its just a comment.
I already own Naim kit, and I love em to bits.

Timmie Boy,

Since you don't believe in software updates, may we presume you are still running MS-DOS on your computer? The HDX is a PC inside; updates are progress, progress good.

I am based in Surrey, UK.

My selling dealer contacted me last week about the upgrade (I had been hassling them for some time...), and has installed the firmware upgrade for me (took my HDX away and brought it back done). I was not given any chance to get my hands on CD-ROMs.

I did have to ask them to provide me (afterwards) with the matching upgrade to the DTC software, which in the end I downloaded as a 23 MB file. Proved impossible to send by e-mail as either too big for my ISP or fell foul of Gmail ban on exe file payloads.

The HDX manual that is now downloadable from the Naim web site describes the HDX running v1.5 of the firmware - I was left to find that for myself but the hardest part was printing it all out.

The good news is it all seems to work and the upgrade also tickled my quite full HDX into resuming its backups (previous had stopped because the deleted files were not really deleted so not enough space available on disk for the backups). It is reassuring to have that aspect working again.

Just checked with my Naim dealer. He's just received today the v1.5a update disk packs for his HDX owners - and I'm one of them! Smile
He offered to post the pack to me, but I'll probably leave it for now and pick it up in the next few days.

Are some really getting the dealer to do the update for them?
Frightened of performing a simple software update?
Tch tch - bunch of wusses!! Razz

I shall be doing the install myself.
I know no fear...

The update seems a bit perplexing. I read the updated manual and as always it is incomplete as it says nothing, for example, about downloading album art.

However, the surprising thing is with the music stores. I understand the concept, but unfortunately this also means that if you've downloaded 24/96 to an external NAS drive and are using this for playback, but now find yourself in need of additional ripping space you will need to transfer files from the HDX to the external NAS and keep this as a Network Share, since once you have designated a device as a Music Store it will only play those files which you have ripped to this location.

Your other choice is to get an additional NAS since I saw no way to designate a folder or a particular drive as the music store.

The other issue is that if you need to "transfer files", I'd suggest that if you are using a NAS that you set-up a mirrored raided system for back-up as opposed to JBOD, since once the files are transferred to the external NAS you no longer have a b/u copy as you did on the HDX HDD.

You need to think this through before just moving files and designating shares or stores, so you don't wind up without appropriate back-up.

I actually burned the discs off the website last week and updated myself.

There are four discs...

Disc One includes Naim DTC update and tools

Disc two required for anyone with 1.4b SP9 or earlier...it takes you to SP10

Disc Three is an upgrade program that prepares SP10 for the 1.5 upgrade

Disc Four is the 1.5 upgrade.

The installation took me about 35min all in and went smoothly...you need to have the HDX connected to the internet.

Only concern would be if you messed something up...you may need to send to factory for fix. But pretty simple stuff.

I thought if you created a folder on the NAS with 'music' in the folder name the HDX will find it and you can designate as a music store and still have other folders on the NAS for downloads etc. (see earlier threads on HDX and NAS)

Not sure Jon, that's not what's stated in the manual. It says device not designated folders, drives, etc...

It must be simple to do.....I have just updated without any problem! Can not see any difference to the DTC though!

My dealer did not give me the option to do the update myself.

Rest assured, this is a wuss-free zone! However, having spent what by any measure is a non-trivial sum only 15 months ago on this HDX kit with my dealer, I was more than happy for that same dealer to have the fun and risk of performing the update (and collecting the HDX from me and returning it).

The only tedious aspect was having to wait for 2 more days to get my hands on the DTC update.

The wallet suffered again - I was loaned a Naim DAC and despite my initial skepticism decided to purchase it: the playback through it, (of HDX-ripped material, other stuff ripped on my AVA RS3 and especially of 24 bit FLAC files) is startling.

My only issue right now is that I had thought the firmware update was going to include auto-decoding of HDCD format CDs. I cannot see that mentioned in the updated manual. Never mind, the AVA RS3 was acquired and set up specifically for that purpose Winker

Apologies for the 2nd post this evening - but can some kind soul please point me to the URL at which Naim makes the recent update available for download?

Thanks.

Gary1, I think I went through the same thought process. I have an Apple Timecapsule, which I use for downloads and photos, etc, but HDX only sets up a music store in the root of the share. I couldn't find a way to make more than one share on the TC, so I would have had to dedicate it to be a music store. I guess the TC is not really a NAS in the true sense, and that may also be true of other networked shared drives..
So I bought a ReadyNAS Duo, which is configured as RAID1, so it's backed up (which the TC isn't), and you can create any number of shares on it. So, the HDX now has its music store on one share, and all my other music/downloads are on another share. The HDX can see all the shares, and you can enable them or disable them as appropriate.

Nero

It is a bit of a hobbyhorse for me, but RAID constructs are not back-ups in the true sense of the word.
They only protect against hardware failure of one of the drives. But they do not protect against (non-)accidental changes or deletions of files that a true back-up does protect against.

So for complete safety one should also make true offline backups when using RAID-constructs.

You have to get it from your Naim Dealer.
You cant download it.

Your dealer can provide you with a website link...even before the disks arrive. I downloaded from the site and had to burn each download to a separate disks...4 in total.

Naim may be hesitant to lose control of the process so I am not going to put the link here. Your dealers should be able to provide if they are comfortable with the process.

As a note...I had to uninstall my current version of DTC to get the new DTC installed...not a lot of difference but the Music Store option now shows up. Also...Disc one has some additional info on linking to itunes playlists and updated manuals.

All right, good news, I now have obtained the new DTC software via my local dealer and it is installed and working (after I had first uninstalled the prior version).

Next question: did Naim by any chance issue new manuals / documentation to help us to use the new DTC software to its fullest extent?

manuals can be downloaded from:

http://www.naimaudio.com/download

goto the public downloads link, then HDX you should see 4 versions of the manual is different languages
