What does your eBay history say about you?
Posted by: nicnaim on 19 July 2006
Whilst cruising the Naim items on eBay tonight, I happened upon an item from one of our esteemed members.
Fearing a possible scam, I decided to check the history, and was fascinated to discover that one of the items previously sold was a "Porta potty".
This convinced me the sale was genuine, as I cannot believe a frauster would go to such lengths.
FWIW my purchases include a 250 and a cement mixer. Nothing sold yet, but clearly I am missing a trick as anything goes!
Does anyone need a 3/4 size snooker table FOC? Buyer collects. This is not a scam, but may be breaking the forum rules.
Either way you get the picture, what does your eBay profile say about you?
Regards
Nic

It says mainly I have unloaded a load of Lambretta and car parts left over from "projects" some finished and others mearly pipe dreams.
Purchases many and various (170+ positive over 200 auctions)including interconnects, record liners, camera bits,VW parts ,MD player.
Not sure what this really says about me though.

Mine says that I'm constantly tweaking bits on my bikes.
It also suggests I buy a lot of CD's, not always wisely!

Mine suggests I bought around 200 records on ebay then sold them all again.

Mine says that my car desperately needed a new gearknob, and that about 4 months ago I found myself with a turntable, but not nearly enough Zep/Floyd/Who/DC/Lizzy etc to play on it

David don't try to be cool, even my 5 year old niece knows what eBay is.

Mine says that I have been buying and selling hi-fi and buying records and that I'm not very prolific (only 19 feedback rating).
It also says I sell too cheap and buy too expensive!

Mine says 'you've never bought or sold anything on e-Bay, cheapskate!'

Garyi, sure I know what eBay is, just that I wouldn't want to buy anything unseen from someone I have never met. I have bought stuff via the internet, but that has been from companies with a reputation to uphold, not someone that may or may not wish to rip me off.
I'm a cash and shake hands on the deal kind of person. And never having bought/sold via eBay does not (JoeH) make me a cheapskate.
OK, eBay must work for some, but I have only ever heard of bad deals (Stuff that doesn't work...) from eBay. Hence my view. Please convince me otherwise.

You only hear what you want to hear.
Surely the replies above should say something positive about E-Bay. None of the people have said "ALL my deals were bad". Otherwise they would not still be using it.
Don't forget in general people are quick to moan and slow to praise.

Like I said, eBay obviously works for some. As far as hearing what I want to hear, well I have actually only heard bad first hand reports from friends buying from eBay. Not one good one. Maybe I am missing out on a lot of bargains but I still prefer to deal with people face to face.

Mine says that all the russ andrews gear that i bought that worked so well with my pre-naim gear was not such a bad buy as i made a tidy profit on it (which paid for my 112/150).

My children used the porta potti on family camping holidays when they were younger. Now they are bigger, they are happy to go to the loo block in the night, hence the sale of the potti.
So no, it's not a scam, and no-one has cloned my account. The original hungryhalibut on eBay is Hilary, my wife. I am hungryhalibut3, but plain old hungryhalibut on this esteemed forum.
Other giveaways are the offer to listen beforehand and the option to pay cash on collection. No scammer would do that. And I'll throw in a cup of tea to Forum members!!

David
I only got into ebay around last Xmas, but have since bought 30 or so items, mostly records, CDs and some speaker cable etc. With the exception of one warped LP and rather a long wait on another, every transaction has been perfect.
I would however be wary of buying anything too expensive.

100 good deals. You will of course only hear about bad deals. Like nobody ever got ripped before eBay?
Many Naimees and dealers trade, and it's not hard to spot them.
Usual caution and care with methods of payment and there should be no problem.
Steve.

Nigel,
That is what I call service, a cuppa as well.
You are absolutely right, the scammers do make some very obvious gaffs when posting, genuine eBayers do not offer what you do. The thing that made me notice the item, was that I remembered you selling another tuner fairly recently, but I think it was a 02 not an 01. I was just checking that it was you.
The fascination was in what does get sold, hence the thread.
My most recent purchase, the cement mixer, has given endless fun, but does mean that the volume needs to be nudged up beyond the 9 O'clock mark!

Yes, I am indeed a fan. I'm fairly new to the world of Hi-Fi, the CM1's are breaking me in gently. Thank you for the welcome.
