Car Hire for the Senior Driver

My in-laws are now in their eighties and very sprightly with it. However, they find long distance driving tiring and not to mention boring. They would like to travel from Hertfordshire to the Lake District by train, and to hire a car for the onward journey.

Does anyone know of a car hire company that will rent a vehicle, but not charge an outrageous sum for the insurance?
