The most overrated foods and drinks

Posted by: Gerontius' Dream on 27 March 2008

Seeing that we have threads on rhubarb and vodka, why not express your views about what you think are the world's most over-rated foods and drinks?

Just to start:

1 Champagne
2 Caviare
3 Steak

I took this to mean that my class would not just spend any amount of money on some thing some one said was good because it was expensive.

I love Purple Sprouting Broccoli. I must be pretty upper class then! Big Grin

The problem with really cheap wine, i.e. under about £4 a bottle, is that most of the money goes towards bottling, distribution and profit, leaving very little for the wine. These costs remain pretty constant so proportionally much more is spent on the wine quality as you go up to, say, a £10 bottle.

So, to sum up, I like...

champagne
caviar
steak
oysters
beetroot
spinach
asparagus
McDonalds
roast parsnips
avocado
porridge
Frosties

(Burp)

After troughing that lot, I really should be a right fat bloater!

Lion bars, however, are overrated.

the most overrated drink is...CHAMPAGNE. Winker

...er actually I think oysters are wonderfully complex and subtle. I enjoy them more each time I eat them. Fantastic, a burst of briny freshness and flavour.

I can eat it. But lets get down to brass tacks. It has no taste what so ever. You are relying on the texture to do something for you. Invariably it has to be mixed with something with flavour. So one is left wondering, 'why bother'
And they are expensive as well.

Okay now you're trampling on my part of the world. Quite possibly avocados, once they've been unpacked from a container in Dover, have lost their appeal. But come out to the west coast some time and eat a fresh in-season Hass avocado, smashed on a piece of good bread, with sea salt and a drizzled with a little bit of olive oil and you will understand.

And another thing: Oysters! They are the best. That's non-negotiable.

Winker

Any shellfish and anything sold at a premium as "organic".

In my drinking days I thought Dom Perignon was not so much over-rated as ridiculously over-priced.

..Wot ...no Jellied eels on your list Scotty ? ..I thought you cockernees lived on them! Winker
Posted on: 28 March 2008 by Jet Johnson
....Diccus will vehemently disagree but ....I can't get me head (or tongue) around white wine ...even on the very odd occasion it's the supposed good stuff ...red screech every time for me I'm afraid ...

.."peasant"?? - who me?

Sounds good to me, Anthony. Does your company do other wines than champagne? I have to say I much prefer a decent red.

avocodo
wine
abalone ????

surely madness is afoot. the last time i was awarded abalone was when a friend of the family got some diving in the 70's. it was amazing. hopefully you are just referring to those big tasteless avocados grown in florida and hawaii. a hass avocado is god's food.

my list would include Foie gras which i am sure will be defended to no end.

second Sweet breads- good god why these are served in finer restraunts escapes me.

and lastly- Steak tar tar.

raw burger anyone?
