The most overrated foods and drinks

Posted by: Gerontius' Dream on 27 March 2008

Seeing that we have threads on rhubarb and vodka, why not express your views about what you think are the world's most over-rated foods and drinks?

Just to start:

1 Champagne
2 Caviare
3 Steak
Posted on: 29 March 2008 by rodwsmith
"Mark - yes both from Old and New world (Michel Chapoutier Chanson Southbank Klein Constantia Turkey Flat RODA Tappanappa The Crossings and Port or Cognac to finsh!"

Wot no Cazes?

Steak tartare is great - if you live in France anyway. Although the Italian (Piemonte) version - 'insalate di carne crude' is even better to my mind.
Food is always best I reckon if it doesn't have to be cooked: oysters, sushi, parma ham, tuna carpaccio, vegetables etc etc

Mmmmm

What a crying shame if would be if everyone liked the same things.
Easier for Tesco though I suppose - every little helps.

Aubergines, however you can keep - they're the devil's hemorrhoids, they are.

Me too and Tonic Water.

Aubergines
Avacado
Fish (pretty much ANY type)
White wine - had some expensive ones in my time and still prefer £2.99 reds!
Sweetcorn - gross and totally unnecessary
Cream

Never tried oysters or caviare so can't comment.

The biggest, most overrated food has GOT to be...

CUSTARD.

I was raised from an early age in Devon, and absolutely loathe and despise the toxic muck. Why anyone eats that warmed-through stale spunk is totally beyond me...

Anything with"organic" in its name.

And Christmas sprouts!

Give me champagne and oysters any day!

I'll second that, my granny has developed an obsession with organic everything, at best it is as good as the regular cheap stuff, at worst it is truly appalling!

Come on domfjbrown, don't beat around the bush! What do you really think of it?

The dinner that are served to Nobel price winners. I have relatives that's been there and has been told that it was really crap. Very little and coocked several hours before.

So when the advert says "Devon knows how they make it so creamy....."

Do you you have inside knowledge the rest of us don't?

Perhaps that explains the now evidently misheard (in hindsight) comments from the Quality Control Manager of the custard factory when asked about the poor quality of the firm's output:

"I'm f**king dis custard!!"

Laurie,

You should give aubergines a second chance. I found them horrible myself for almost 40 years, and now I think their flavour is a unique phenomenon. In some respects it's the greatest vegetable ever IMO.

Aubergines on their own are indeed barely edible and completely uninteresting. But try and combine them with something else (olive oil, herbs, spices, ratatouille, tomato sauce, hommus and many other things) and you'll find out that aubergines can, if prepared properly, be one of the finest and most delicious vegetables. A symphony of harmonious flavours.

Do a Google and look for French or Middle-Eastern (especially Lebanese) recipes, the cooks there really know how to make the best of them. You're missing something really.

I don't know but I fully agree that tofu tastes crap. Crappier than crap.

Last time I bought some I ended up making a Novratan Curry with it so I could cover the absolutely awful taste.

Again, if we want to change our mind about tofu we should find some veggie pinko who can enlighten us. Until then I'll buy meat.

Deep fried Tofu cubes, served with a spicy peanut sauce & rice.
Deep fried Tofu also works very well in a stir fry.

You have confused a "veggie pinko" for a recipe book cheese;
you were in need of the later, but to be fair it's an easy mistake to make.

For example this is a pink vegetarian ...

... whereas this is a recipe book, which happens to be pink.

I don't know but I fully agree that tofu tastes like carp, must have been the Nam Pla sauce Razz

If your Tofu tastes fishy Roy you need many things checked;
I would start with your sense of taste,
& if that's not the problem maybe your Tofu emporium! Razz Big Grin

In the same spirit of raprochement and reconciliation, perhaps domfjbrown ought to give that CUSTARD another try. The proper job, made with egg yolks, sugar, milk and vanilla pod, I mean; not any dodgy and unpalatable 'alternative' ingredients... Big Grin

Hear! Hear!
After all custard is just melted ice-cream, & who doesn't like that?

No, but I have suspicions that "alternative cream" may well taste better than custard, though still absolutely revolting. Let's not go there!

As for "melted ice cream" - no way - the texture's totally different. Ice cream is nice.
Having said that, you might be onto summat there as I *hate* vanilla (especially in ice cream).

My point:- custard is melted ice-cream, & ice-cream is frozen custard;
same food, different temperature.

Most over rated food in Uk has got to be Brussel Sprouts. This food is not only offensive but also not fit for human consumption! Great food for pigs but please dont force humans to eat it.

The most pretentious food must be vegeterian food eg Korn sausages. Why eat imitation sausages when one can have the real thing. Also decafenated tea and coffee, whats that all about, (it is healthy I hear their cry). Beer without alcohol, what next new sex without orgasm and pleasure (tell us about it as half of the wives moan in frustrated silence). Smile
