The most overrated foods and drinks

Seeing that we have threads on rhubarb and vodka, why not express your views about what you think are the world's most over-rated foods and drinks?

Just to start:

1 Champagne
2 Caviare
3 Steak

OK then send them to me. Cooked and slightly roasted in butter, add a few thinly sliced almonds - delicious ! Good idea for tomorrow, thanks.

Agreed! Or cooked with Chestnuts. Or sautéed with some smoked bacon. Delicious!

The trick is, don't overcook them!

I'm sure most peoples dislike of a veg' stem from experience of them being over/badly cooked.

Brussel Sprouts are one of my favs', & even my kids like them.

With brussels sprouts it is irrelevant 'how they are cooked'. Perhaps if they are cleverly disguised in rich flavoured curry sauce where one cannot see them and the taste of the sauce is so strong as to protect the taste buds from their foul taste, but no one still has to bite into them, not a pleasant thought. I think I would rather have a spoonfull of cod liver oil in orange flavour...!

Avocado - tick, 'agree strongly'. Green margerine on a stick.

Add to the list all melons. Ghastly things. And goat's cheese. Especially goat's cheese, now i think about it.

The guy who mentioned Caol Ila as a positive has exceptional taste Winker

I must say I agree with tofu, but to be fair I don't think it was ever rated to become over rated.

Its creation as a product through to eating is all pretty ghastly.

As a chef I found it very difficult to work with as well, although except I may have not been purchasing the right stuff.

Quorn is also pretty shit. My feeling there is a wealth of good vegetarian food out there, nuts beans, veg, pules etc, so using some of this foul 'created' stuff makes you a little worse than meat eaters in terms of what you are happy to put away.

RE the brussel sprouts.
If you buy them & keep them while they are still on the stalk, & eat them while they are small, they aren't bitter, I find.
Another way is to shred them up & stir fry them with chopped up bacon, & maybe even a bit of honey. Maybe its not the traditional way of cooking them, (& indeed may be even disguising them a bit) but very nice all the same.
Go on. Be brave. Try it!
Matt.

To 555,

The last time I had brussel sprouts was about 10 years ago. All I remember it was Christmas and I was a guest at a friend's house. I was offered BS and I ate them out of politeness. Kept a straight face, even managed to convince my host that I liked them, there should be an award for acting under pressure. As far as I can recollect the BS were either boiled or roasted. Its horses for courses alot of people love BS and some do not;like marmite. However what I love is a bowl of chilli peppers (like the ones you get in kebab shops)together with a decent red wine eaten outside in the garden in the sunny summer time.
