Walk The Line/Johnny Cash

Really enjoyed this movie at the weekend, some great performances, both as actors and singers.
My wife wants to buy the OST (she probably liked the music more than I did). Anyone suggest a Cash compilation as a good alternative, or is the OST very good? I do not intend buying his entire back catalogue!

Buy Live At Folsom Prison. After watching the film it will raise the hairs on the back of your neck! Agree the film is excellent.

After seeing the film, I went out and bought Ring Of Fire which seemed like a pretty good Greatest Hits. Have since picked up Live at San Quentin; Live at Folsome and some of the American Recordings series.

Cash's "live in the nick" CDs are available as special package at discount price. I just bought 'em, and they're pretty good. I saw the film and I'd say that Phoenix and Witehrspoon do a great job singing the Cash and Cash/Carter songs. I'd go so far as to say that Reese Witherspoon is easier on the ear than June Carter.
The currently available Mojo ( the one with the Ray Davies interview ) has a sort of top ten Johnny Cash pick that puts Folsom/Quentin and the first of the American recordings albums as the top three.
I agree the movie is a good, even great, watch. I find San Quentin better listening than Folsom. But even on these two discs, there's material that you'll want to skip.

The tunes he cut for Sun are brilliant and primal - I only have these as vinyl but they must be available on CD.
Also support the prison recordings and the Rick Rubin stuff. Avoid anything from about 1975 until the American recordings unless you are determined to be a die-hard fan or completist.

Thanks all,
Bought the 'Ring Of Fire' Compilation and ordered American recordings I and III. My wife likes the early stuff and I like the later gloom!
