The Durutti Column

Posted by: krak on 09 July 2002

Since a large portion of the folks in this forum are from the UK, I was wondering if anyone has heard of/has any information on the group “The Durutti Column”?
I currently have 3 discs of theirs which over time I have grown to love. However I know nothing about who these guys are except that they’re British, and come to think of it, I’m not even 100% sure of that fact.

Its a long story but many years ago I was a big fan, an errant brother committed fratricide on my record collection, I discovered Japanese trumpeters who tortured birds and the rest is history. I have a soft spot for Factory, Rough Trade et al. The latter taste I share with Mick Parry it would seem.

Cool site. I was always a bit of a fan, and saw DC live many, many times in the early Factory years. It was always a great gig, and just as unique then as the stuff still sounds now. As for albums, if you haven't got them already get the first two albums 'The return of the Durutti Column' and 'LC' both are stunning, with 'LC' being IMHO the best album he / they ever made. They made a few excellent 12" singles around that time to which may I guess be on the CDs (I have all the early stuff on vinyl).

Those are the 2 CDs I have. They're great. I seem to play them over & over again.

... the film 24 Hour Party People. The story of Factory, in which DC have a rather tragi-comic part to play as the old faithful Tony Wilson faves...

The first album is a classic, with the sandpaper sleeve.

Bit of a bugger to file with the other 'D'albums.

I used "Lips that would kiss" to demo my first Hi-Fi record player, a Rega Planar 3, many years ago.

I received "Fin" by Crispy Ambulance mail order today. I look forward to listening to it.
