Flatcap2 - is it worth an audition?

Posted by: rowett on 22 November 2002

Hi,
After having entered the Naim world a few months ago with a CD5 and NAIT 5, connected via NACA5 to some Arcaydis Concept 2 speakers, and with XMAS coming up I was thinking about buying myself a present...

My local dealer has recommended the Flatcap 2 as a good upgrade to my system and I'll probably borrow it some weekend soon to test it out. Before I do so I'd be interested in feedback from anyone here who has tested the Flatcap 2 themselves and their opinion.

Many thanks in advance,
Chris

Julian,
Thanks for the advice! However whatever I get next has to match the styling of the current kit - and I suspect it will be many months before any new-style HiCaps are available second hand.
Can't complain though - if it hadn't been for the new style I'd have never been allowed Naim gear in the house!

Go and try the flatcap for yourself. It will make quite a difference.

Also go and listen to a hi-cap it will make even more of a difference.

I have a CD 3.5 and a flatcap 2 makes an enormous difference to the quality of the music it makes. Definitely a great idea!

I have a CD5/Nait5/FC2 combo and adding the FC2 made everything sound just "better"... Maybe "More of everything" is a better way of describing it.

Be sure to use the better output for the CD5 (output A) as you have two outputs to choose from on the FC2. The second one should be used for the Nait5 so make sure you get an extra cable for that.

Adding a HiCap is probably gonna make an even bigger difference (it should as it is more expensive, at least if you buy a new, matching one) but then trading the CD5 for a CDX2 would maybe be an even better choice. Depends on the budget I guess...

Audition the FC2 and see what you think.

Good luck!
