Chinese or curry?

I’m a curry man myself. Chinese is OK now and again but it can’t top a good curry.

Andrew, do you know even the most tasty soups of all time are rarely memorable, they are just, well, soup really arn't they?
Posted on: 16 January 2006 by garyi
Steve I believe there is a conspiracy on the part of the Chinese. I believe they are all in it together and have a rota to eat at each others restaurants. Because every one I check out had loads of Chinese eating in them so I thought I was safe.
It was just the same in San Fransico as well, just because the Chinese are eating there does not mean its good. I would go so far as to say the Chinese eat just as much shit as we do, and have as much capability at food, only theirs seems interesting to us, when infact if you break it down, crispy beef and sweet and sour pork, are in reality shit food, such as chep pie and mash or tripe.
We eat lots of spuds, they eat lots of rice, face it I am right. In general Chinese food is crap, 90% of Chinese food output in the UK is slop, utter shit which is just adding to the overall shitness of English cuisine in general.
And they are laughing, there must be whole conventions on how to put an English/Chinese menu together, and don't forget the fourty eight times reheated crispy duck whilst you are at it.

Well when you put it like that... you certainly do have a point. Want to pop round and I'll cook curry?

Garyi,
One of the most memorable soups I've had (for all the right reasons) involves pork, melon and scallops. Similar to most Chinese soup it is watery in consistency but packed with flavour in a brothy/stocky kind of way

Then how about steaming some seabass with some ginger. When done, serve on a plate and put lots of 2" slivers of spring onion on top of it, then heat a small amount (1-2 teaspoons) of sunflower oil until really hot then pour it on top and sizzle the spring onion and top of the fish. Then pour on top some soy sauce that has been specially seasoned for seafood (it is of the correct level of strength too).
If you don't have the special seafood soy sauce, then some light soy sauce will do.

Both are part of my staple diet although there is a lack of decent restaurants. I am sure I have said that before.
We have a fusion of dishes at home combining both Chinese and Indian cuisine.

Finely sliced, added for the last ten mins or so, even with the anchovies, peppers, onions, etc.....mmmmmmmm

Ive had some efforts of home indian cooking in the past, and i have to admit nothing beats home cooking imo no matter what you cook.
Most cafes cannot cook english breakfasts!(properly)
How many fish and chip shops do good fish and chips, and look how expensive they are.
Home cooking is best ultimately in my experience, but sometimes it tastes better when someone else does it, although its not...if you see what i mean.
p.s. A blender and grinder are essential kitchen tools when doing indian cooking, and no curry powder - thats cheating.
cheers.

WTF??? Garyi, if you had simply said that you don't like Chinese food and had some bad experiences I might still have some respect for you, but it's in pretty poor taste to slur an ethnic minority and an entire nation of people based on this diatribe of baseless accusations and offensive comments.

iDunno I refuse to called a racist. it is fine for everyone to say english food is shit is it not?
The simple fact is in general chinese take aways are shit and the quality of food is shit, and the slur is on the dumb ass English like myself who choose to continue purchasing some of the following products on a weekly basis:
Deep fried chicken or prawn balls, 98% funny fluffy doug stuff.
Sweet and sour XXX, A poor quality sauce, which keeps getting bought because of the English penchance for sweet things.
Chinese Curry. Mostly large pieces of onions in gravy.
Crispy Duck. Too right its a week old.
Spring Roll. Out of the freezer, very very greasy.
Suspicisouly tender grey beef anyone?
What about the sliced pork, always of a conform shape with the slightly red top?
iDunno let me leave you with one observation I made when living in Watford.
We had two chinese takeaways one to the right of us and one to the left. A van would pull up outside both. On the side of the Van was the company name and a statement 'Specialist Meat for the Chinese trade.'
Ponder that one for a while.
FWIW I have had a lot more luck with Indian food, I rate it highly none the least of which because you actually have to chew the meat in the food.

Having lived in Asia I do like Chinese food so I have some sympathy for garyi's view of the vast majority of the anglicised stuff we get over here in the uk. I don't personally think it's part of a great conspiracy but more of a business need to pander to the tastes of the target market.
Good Chinese food is truly excellent and to be honest I still find some of the anglicised ok as well. We were in town on Sunday so went for one of those all-you-can-eat buffet lunches and while most of the options available were "crowd pleasers" it was still tasty enough.
In a choice between Chinese and Indian food, especially as delivered by your typical UK takeaway, I'd have to go with the Indian option.

Indian. Give me a nice ring-stinger any day. A couple of onion bhajis with the yoghurt followed by chicken pathia or Madras with vegetable pillau and Keema naan should do it.

Despite what we think about Chinese, Indian or other take a ways, when we are knackered or our cupboards are bare they are handy.

Banana? For ten minutes? How long do you cook them Ali? Max temp oven - no fan - 12 mins tops.
Yup, looks like we need anothe pizza thread.

It's the following statements
". . I believe there is a conspiracy on the part of the Chinese."
and
"And they are laughing, there must be whole conventions on how to put an English/Chinese menu together . ."
that are discourteous to Chinese people and to the Chinese members of this Forum in particular.

You missed the tail end of that sentence, which should read "if you're a humourless fuck.".

pies at pie mash shops are homemade to my knowlege, consisting of mincemeat and onion made and baked in house.

FWIW I have had a lot more luck with Indian food, I rate it highly none the least of which because you actually have to chew the meat in the food.
Let's have a look at each of these:
>Deep fried chicken or prawn balls, 98% funny fluffy doug stuff.
Dog, dough or Doug Graham?
>Sweet and sour XXX, A poor quality sauce, which keeps getting bought because of the English penchance for sweet things.
Funnily enough, the Chinese like sweet things too. Including their fantastic pastries they do. Again, quality is dependent upon the establishment.
>Chinese Curry. Mostly large pieces of onions in gravy.
Whoever goes to a Chinese place and orders chips and curry needs some cultural re-adjustment.
>Crispy Duck. Too right its a week old.
Depends on the establishment too. The good ones take a whole newly roast duck and cut it up in front of you.
>Spring Roll. Out of the freezer, very very greasy.
The Chinese laugh at us Westerners who order spring rolls and prawn crackers. Made by Chinese for Western taste.
>Suspicisouly tender grey beef anyone?
You really ought to be more selective about where you eat. Although they do say that chefs tend to be less choosey about the food they eat themselves, or is that a gross generalisation?
>What about the sliced pork, always of a conform shape with the slightly red top?
Do you mean char-sui pork?
Andrew
