listening "only"?

Posted by: Uwe Supper on 23 February 2001

Hi there,
going through the 'knob' thread, I was just wondering, how forum participants would define 'listening to my system'. Does this mean concentrating on the music only, or do some -heresy(?) - read the newspaper, do some ironing, ...or any other activites? I know Mick, you always (?) have a glass of Whisky: :-)
Just curiosity!
Enjoy your week-end, read your answers on Monday!
Regards
Uwe

For myself is listening only. I listen to the stereo all day - but pay real attention to music only when I'm listening "only".

I used to listen without anything other than a beer in hand. I would go for 4 or 5 hours on a weekend day. Nowadays, I seem to be able to listen for only a couple of hours without doing anything else. I then usually look through magazines or photo albums. Just looking at pictures while listening makes the music sound better for some reason - just like driving. My mind is somewhat occupied but not totally on any one thing. It seems by not concentrating on the music, I actually hear more. I remember when I was a teenager, I found that by listening to the bass line, the lead guitar solos sounded a whole lot better. Kind of the same thing.

Somehow, for me, the best "hi-fi moments" come when I am cooking. There is something about spending a few hours in the kitchen with a decent album on that seems to make me more receptive to any sort of music! Clearly, the oven is either not on the same spur as the hi-fi or it does not have the same negative impact as does a fridge or a computer! Anyone know if this is objectively the case, or can it be attributed to the fact that Hicks cuisine is normally fuelled by Tanqueray and Schweppes?

I'm definitely in the 'listening only' camp - could be 4-5 hours at a weekend, if time allows, and closing eyes definitely helps.

Evenings are best though - lights out and totally immersed in music!

It is not unknown for me to be listening to music, with the TV on subtitles, and reading or doing a crossword, drinking and enjoying conjugal relations - sometimes all at the same time.

Interesting answers; I always feel a bit guilty when I do something else at the same time. Mind you, sometimes I grade my student's papers - and the grades are usually higher than without music played on the naim system.

It is true that I can make love-making last for hours - but that includes taking her to a movie, dinner etc.

cheers

As much as possible. I would guess that I sit and seriously listen maybe 8-12 hours a week. But I do a lot of other listening. I listen while I cook, eat, and yes, while reading, often about music, no less.
