whats going on with the film industry

Posted by: Neill Ferguson on 16 June 2007

hi all

whats going with all the films that are coming out just now. I have never known a time of such poor film releases. A summer of sequels. Almost ever film I have seen latley is totally bland to say the least.

Films seem to be turning into mini tv dramas only 18 months between episodes with our fav characters growing up, marrying having kids etc. examples of this seem to be the mind numbing spiderman 3, shrek 3 oh and pirates.

Is it to much to ask to have an original idea hit our screens. The last decent film I seen was sin city. That was almost two years ago. Although bond did make up for what was a dreadful year of films last year.

This year there seems to be little coming out to get me excited about. I really cant think of one film that I cant wait to go and see.

What has happened with the tv also why are tv shows trying to be over long films. examples of this are 24, lost, prison break.
24 is long past its best
lost season 2 poor, however season 3 was good
prison break season 2 has ruined it.

why this post, well am wondering if anyone else out there feels the same.

I feel that the answer is contained within your question. Namely, its an industry, & is there only to make money, not to be creative/artistic/thought provoking, etc. If it sells (or has sold in the recent past), then lets do it again. Not much different to the teen-targeting pop industry.
A triumph of marketing hype over substance.
Oh dear, there I go again, showing my age.

Don't worry.
We have "walker texas ranger" every bloody evening at 20.00 on national broacast.
Sell your tv and get some records instead.

Adam, though, is ideally placed to see any number of cool new movies, since the French film industry is thriving and turning out intelligent, mature films for.. well, you know. Shame they never get shown here, or you have to fight hard to see them. British films have been a joke since the 1970s and Hollywood gets worse and worse.

Every small French town seems to have a cinema showing great films! Move to France before Sarkozy puts the house prices up!!

Do you mean to say that you're not looking forward to seeing the Transformers movie!

You didn't catch Paris Hilton's appearance in "House of Wax" then, Fidelio?

there is a significant independant film industry on this planet (globally, so learn some languages or be prepared for either subtitles or (rarely) over-dubs), with quality output.

You only need to accept that most of the hollywood output is pap, and go find the good stuff.

Oh, what I meant to say was "quit whining!". Pay a visit to a good video store, or tune in to one of those rent via the interweb thingies. Sorted.
