Powerigle Mains Distribution System
Posted by: Polarbear on 30 July 2005
What is this I have been reading about in hi-fi+. Apparently its made by Naims German distributor and can be obtained through the Naim network.

So it is a Naim product afterall then!

I wonder how long it's been in the eStore, and perhaps more significantly, whether it's £450 better than my Grahams hydra.

Thanks Dev,
yes we have been away for the last two weeks.
I am now warming the system up again!

I too will be interested to see how this compares to the Grahams Hydra. I do know that Grahams recommend you do not have any spare (i.e.) unused power cords as these act as an aerial and pick up RFI. I assume that as the power cords to the Powerigle are welded and therefore permanent that many users could find themselves with a number of aerials in their system unless they have a full complement of 6, 8 or 11 boxes.

So Mr Polarbear, have you been able to find out any more about the 'Hedgehog'?
Posted on: 18 August 2005 by graham55
I think that it looks extraordinarily ugly and that it's hellishly pricey compared with my 8-headed Hydra. I shan't be changing any time soon.

No not yet Tommy, I have been catching up from my holiday.
Perhaps Peter could tell us more?

Guys,
IMHO the discussion about the different mains cables is not really worthy... usually this forum is much more open...
Why are so many of you so afraid to simply try it ?
The most common advice here is: "Try it yourself and believe your ears." Do it!
Yes, the powerigel is expensive, but so is a highcap... from an engineering point of view there are no arguments to have a Supercap to provide simple 24V DC either.
I had a powerigel for home dem for 2 weeks and it is remarkable what it does. The effect can be compared with adding a HC to a bare 202. So, the powerigel has clearly better VFM as it costs only 50perc...
However, I ended up buying a Vibex powerblock as it sounds more natural and adds an additional lightinig protection.

Sounds great, I've left a message for Doug to give me a ring to see if I can get one to try?
Otherwise it will be a Naim e-shop shop

Peter

It may be, of course, that we are all used to Naim telling us not to substitute their mains cables and, as good "Naim sheep", we're conditioned.
And now, without warning, they release an horrendously styled and priced German hedgehog on us!
Remember that we all had to be re-educated on the introduction of a CD player and unipivot tonearm, after all Naim had said about those!

Dear Friends,
No photo, and not much of a mod, but I made a lovely Hdra for a couple of pounds using a simple mains distribution box. All solid high quality brass clamping arrangements, and ceratainly only the genuine Naim leads used. Not alltered in any way. The only addition was about a foot of good heavy cable from the distributors block to the inevitable Crabtree plug. Maybe not a job for the totally hamfisted, but something within the capabilities of anyone capable of fittting a a UK 13 amp plug.
The main thing is it works, Subtle were the gains, and I would be hard pressed to explain them now as I only did it as an experiment, but thought it fine. The work was totally reversible, of course, though now I have some spare Crabtrees...

Why don't you blow right past this and put in dedciated mains spurs? I reckon they don't cost anymore than a Powerigel to install.
Of course this maybe overkill for most folks.....
.....but I can assure you this sounds hellava lot better than the hydra with standard naim power cords I had before.

This leads into sensitive territory because it involves electrical safety regulations for indivdual countries and discussions that naim quite rightly does not sanction to occur on this (their) "official" forum.
For more info etc please e-mail me at:

I received my Powerigel with 8 power cords last Friday. It powers the whole system through a 10mm2 dedicated spur. So far it is in accordance with my expectations. It's better than every mains distribution system I have tried. It has advantages over all the power blocks because of the one-point welded power cords. This reduces 8 sockets and plugs. It makes the system sound right. I'm not thinking about HF, LF or timing. I can concentrate on the music. IMO it's the right equipment for a naim system just like a dedicated spur or a fraim.
We also tried the Powerigel with the Equitech transformer and two "tube" audiophiles said that they could hardly tell that this is not a tube-based system. Later I connected all my video sources and a heater to the transformer to have it run in before switching to the system.
I hope that the Powerigel will continue to improve without any down sides.
Regards
Emil

Emil,
could you hear any difference with the Equitech in place?

Nigel (PB),
If you read Paul Messenger in this month's HiFi Choice, who as you know, has a Naim system, he is raving about the Powerigel with his Naim system.
Have we figured out whether we can get one in this country yet? Sorry can't be bothered to read every post ...........

Err...I think it's by Alvin Gold and you can't miss it, it's in the upfront bit with the artist cartoons attached which they have every month. The "igel" cartoon is pretty good actually.
