Stream from HDX?

Posted by: docmark on 14 September 2010

Here's what I would like to do - when listening to music on my main system, I'd like to be able to move to a different part of my home & still be able to listen to the music. Is the UnitiQute what I need? I'mc using an HDX/DAC combo, and also have a NAS. Can the HDX stream? It's already hooked up to my network thru an Airport
Extreme.

Yes it can.

The HDX functions as a UPnP server (and NaimNet server too) as well as having local playback so can be used with either Uniti / UnitiQute / NDX or NaimNet room amplifiers to provide a music source for distributed audio / multiroom use...

Quick followup question - can the HDX (or UnitiServe) be set to control the UnitiQute(s) so that the same music plays in each location?

That would be a NaimNet (proxied, multicast StreamNet) application, providing full room-to-room synchronization.

UPnP AV does not explicitly provide for synchronized zone playback.

I am not sure whether the HDX can be set to control Qute, but you can definitely listen to HDX in one room ( and elsewhere) and have the Qute play the same music. But, the Qute goes further, it can play different music that is also stored on HDX (or NAS)to that being played by HDX, at the same time. So, if one person wants to listen to music from HDX in one room ( or several rooms if they are on network), somebody else can listen to different music in another location using Qute.

Is that clear or confusing? I think it's rather clever.

All in all the Qute is a very accomplished piece of kit. I am delighted with mine.

Dave's reply is absolutely correct - the Qute cannot be controlled from the HDX to synce with what the HDX is playing - the Qute can play the same tracks independently but not synchronised.

Synchronisation of rooms is a function of NaimNet and not a function of UPnP.

Thanks Dave

I see the error of my response.

I use HDX as a source into an av switcher (no names here) which is then connected via cat5 cabling around the house to various room amps (including to Qute). Hence, I can get synchronised HDX throughout house.

Phil or David,

If I buy a HDX, connect it to my main system, then buy a Naimnet amplifier and suitable speakers, connect the HDX to the Naimnet amplifier, will I be able to get synchronised music?.

Can Naimnet amplifiers be bought or do I have to get an 'installer' to install a whole Naimnet system?

Best regards

Hans

No, a properly-qualified Ethernet switch (e.g., NetStreams' own branded units) will suffice - each amp is is own renderer. No AV switcher required - everything is network-controlled.

If you want rooms to be able to be synchronised then you really need to go the NaimNet route which would mean your HDX, a qualified network switch (has to fully support IGMP otherwise you'll get breakups in audio but there are qualified switches available), several NaimNet amps (you would require more than one as NaimNet amps synchronise with each other - not with what the HDX is playing on its analogue output as that is independent) and some sort of control (in-wall Touchscreens, iLinX on the iPhone, web browser etc.)

This would then need to be at least *PROGRAMMED* by someone - who knows the system and has the setup software ... it isn't an end user installed system by any means.

Cheers
