Fraid that "better" doesn't really cover it. I found out the hard way on Sunday night at Jonathan Hales's place. (Mad)

Jeremy -

Are you doing this a la certain-other-posters just to wind us all up? If not, please don't leave us CDS2-ers on tenterhooks...

Thanks

Derek,

What I heard just confirmed my impressions after having had the same player for a few weeks last year before it was fully run-in. I went on holiday and Jonathan bought it. Bastard.

The first thing that hits you is how much wider the soundstage is now. Detail is on a different level. Highs are sweeter. Vocals are startlingly more realistic. There is a palpable sense that someone is in the room with you. The CDS2 sounds grainy in comparison. Bass is tighter and more tuneful. Everything is smooother. It's a bit like going from a 72 to a 52.

Jono’s system is hugely better than the last time I heard it, and some of this may be down to his new 250. For example, some of the familiar "black background" effect that you get with the 500 is in evidence.

Downside is what I heard in my system. Probably because the player gives it to you "warts and all", it doesn't seem to me to be as forgiving as the old one. Great recordings sound so good that bad ones can be irritating. I hate the idea that I might start to choose music based on production rather than musical values. This is probably the reason that I have prevaricated for so long. When I had the beast at home I swung between YES, YES, YES and Mmmm ten times a day.

Tim,

Sorry to leave you in the lurch, was a) sleeping b)working c)listening to Jad Fair and Yo La Tengo and Ben Harper and checking out the fortunes of Aldershot Town FC COME ON YOU SHOTS! www.shotsweb.co.uk in case some poor soul don't have a team to support you could do worse. Finally I get to Naim Forum and my Naim muse Minky who once again disturbs my blissfull CDS3 denial.

Thanks Dave for getting the link up.

Minky, you have no idea how close I was to doing the deed when I visited the UK at new year. What hope for us is there?

Dave -

Thanks. How refreshing to hear something about how we can make our exisiting kit sound better for almost nothing, instead of the slightly predictable news that it could sound a lot better if we spent thousands of pounds on it.
