82/hi/90… is it at all possible?

Posted by: silklee on 13 February 2003

Hi,
I might have a slight chance of ending up with a 82/hi/90 on a ES14. Am I crazy to even think of combining 82 and 90? I tried to do a search using '82 + 90' but it told me that there were too many hits.

Please advise.

Going from CDI + 92/HI +90/3 to CDI + 102/psc/HI + 90/3 was my biggest improvement ever. Adding an 180 didn't do that much after that i.m.o. (but perhaps it where my Intro's that were so easy to drive).

Never tried it but I cannot see why it won't work.

An 82 will give you an immediate 'in your face' improvement.

A better power amp (eg 250) will perhaps give you a slightly more subtle although definite improvement. It will however provide a capable portal into which you can feed, with confidence, infomation available from preceding stages. What I am saying is that you shouldn't underestimate the value of better quality power amp.

In effect you are simply sticking to the correct hierarchy. I replaced my 92 with an 82 and ran an 82/flat/90 combo for a while. I upgraded to a 250 and then bought a hi-cap. The 82 was the biggest uprgrade!

Silklee,

you don't mention what front end you are using at the moment.

There is no reason why you shouldn't use a 82/hi/90 combination. It will work well and give you plenty of scope to up-grade at some future date.

Obviously it will sound better with a bigger power amp but for now you will see a big improvement in your system.

I had the 90.3/92r combo as my beginning and replaced teh 90.3 with a s/h 150 , nice change, more umph. Now I'm waiting to get an 82 when funds allow and hope that is a much bigger change. CD5 at the front and Spendors at the end. FC2 inbetwween also.
I just read in Naim's material that a FC2 can power an 82, I was amazed.

Hi,

I agree with everyone else that 82 will give you a great improvement.

Also, you are using ES14's, very good speakers imho. I used ES14's myself for many years and was amazed by the improvement in going from a 140 to a 250. So I can only advice you to go for a more powerful amp as well (>140)

I would of course like to go for a better power amp, but as this point in time, there is only a used 82/hi that might be offered to me. Anyway the deal is not firmed up yet. Have to see how it goes.

Vik,
i refuse to take up your bet. Big Grin
But actually i am still thinking of the Allaes. 90 on Allaes...

Btw, do you think the ES14 or the Allaes will be easier on the 90?

Silklee,

have you not thought about upgrading your CD5 to a CDX before upgrading to the 82?

Hierarchy suggests front end first and therefore you will get better value for money by upgrading the CD first. There is nothing wrong with purchasing the 82 first but it would be interesting to find out which would sound better, a CD5/82 or CDX/92. I think it would be fair to say most forum members would go for the CDX/92!

Hi NB.
Not too long ago, i actually got a CDX and a hicap to try on my 92/90.

The CDX is good. It really made me appreciate the 'source first' thingy. The CDX was a step closer to the analog sound than the CD5.

However as mentioned in a previous post, I have a boom problem in my room and the hicap on the 92 seems to solve much of that.

And of course the price i have to pay for a used hicap is cheaper than that of upgrading to a cdx.

Anyway, i think the 82/hi deal is off. Frown

The search is still on for a hicap.
