Porcupine Tree - where to start

Posted by: Foot tapper on 26 October 2009

Everyone on the Naim Forum seems to love Porcupine Tree, so I've taken a look on the Amazon site for their album. Only there are loads of them Big Grin

Which album should I start with for a first taste?

I've tried searching on this forum but there are literally hundreds of posts....

Many thanks, FT

A wee bit PT obsessed around this forum.
This is not necessarily a bad thing IMO.

Foot tapper, you're not alone... I'd never tried Porcupine Tree until I saw the thread on 'The Incident' a while back. I bought this first, then 'Fear of a Blank Planet', probably will get 'In Absentia' or 'Lightbulb Sun' next. Great Stuff..!

I started with The Incident - mainly because it was just out and there was a rather lovely vinyl deluxe edition.

Then In Absentia (nigh impossible to get on vinyl and now deleted on CD apparently, so grab one while you can)

Followed that with Fear Of A Black Planet, We Stole The Skyline and Lightbulb Sun though the driving force behind those last three was vinyl availability as much as anything Smile

Unless anyone else points out any gaping holes in that collection, I'll probably stick there.

Steve,

Steven Wilson said in a recent interview, In Absentia, is planned for a High Quality Vinyl release sometime next year.

Excellent, it's possibly my favourite of what I've heard so far.

The editions with the extra 5.1 disc sound rather good too.

My liking for PT started because of Lontano. For me In Absentia would be the one to stat with. Truly excellent album which I am currently playing.

Always up for a challenge . There seems too much interest and following of this group for me not to have a try . So " In Absentia is now playing on Spotify Premium .
Two tracks in , so far so good .

In Absentia is my favorite, because it's powerfull, coherent and thus less extreme compared to the other power-albums.
And Coma Divine is the only live-album I've heard so far and I think that's a great album too. Both musically and technically! Cool

Depends where your coming from, if your an old Floyd fan try the early (delirium) stuff, if Tool's more your sort of thing "blank planet" or "dead wing" may be a better bet.

For any distributed audio fans out there, Porcupine Tree have FLAC downloads of most of their back catalog on their store. I've just bought Lightbulb Sun and In Absentia - It's downloading now. £6 per album.

I'm glad you posted this thread - I was about to ask the same thing.
My epiphany was buying The Incident, and then followed by In Absentia which is outstanding, Signify, which is different but outstanding and Coma Divine, which is also outstanding (catch the drift?).
Currently listening to In Absentia, which has influences from Howe, Bruford, Venner, Barrett, et alia, but it's nice to find a band that ignores the urge to sound like U2.
Wilson has a great voice, and the production is superb - you can hear everything clear as a bell, not like your usual prog. Drums and percussion to die for (get some ATCs and wind 'em up)
Currently waiting for the postie to deliver Blank Planet, but I could be here some time
Enjoy
Cheers
John
