Outstanding Live Al***s
Posted by: Ian G. on 03 November 2007
Having just slipped this on the turntable,
,IMHO one of the best live albums of all time, I set to thinking of others in that class. I guess I mean live albums which are so good you should buy them even if you have all the studio albums already. Live albums which bring something fresh and new to the music.
From my own shelves the following came to mind,
Made in Japan by Deep Purple,
Live & Dangerous by Thin Lizzy,
Working without a safety net by Janis Ian,
Live at Massey Hall by Neil Young,
Acoustic Live by Nils Lofgren,
The Koln Concert by Keith Jarrett.
What other albums deserve to join this rarefied company in your opinion.

John Mayer "On Any Given Thursday"
Tori Amos "Welcome To Sunny Florida"
James Taylor "Pull Over"
all on music DVD, JM also available on CD. Often after viewing the video once, I just listen to the audio tracks, but usually requires a monitor for the menu to start, otherewise essentially using as audio discs.

My vote would be for Pink Floyd 1980-81, The Wall Live, Is there anybody out there? Good sound, good live vibe and different from the studio album.

Can I add "David Live" by David Bowie? Think it definitely fits the "Live albums which bring something fresh and new to the music" criteria.

A corker from start to finish - with some witty repartee in James' lovely Texas drawl too.
Son of Larry McMurtry ('Lonesome Dove' etc) BTW.

Although I'm a huge fan of Pink Floyd, I don't think their live releases add anything to the studio versions - apart from the memories of the Wall concert I went to.

I'd agree with both The Wall (live) and the Led Zeppelin BBC sessions. I'm also very fond of both Leonard Cohen's live albums, the creatively named 'Live Songs' and 'Live in Concert'.
Switching genres, I think Miles Davis's 1964 Lincoln Centre concert is rather special (though why the still insist on issuing it as a double album of the slow and fast songs rather than the original concert order is beyond me). Similarly Davis's Plugged Nickel and Cellar Door sessions.
Bill Evans 1961 Village Vanguard concert is extremely special. Originally issued on two albums (Waltz for Debbie and Sunday at the Village Vanguard), I think you can now buy a set containing everything together. Coltrane's live recordings from the same venue are also rather special.
Moving to classical, there are almost too many to mention. Sticking to those that are genuinely live (which excludes Mackerras's wonderful 2006 Edinburgh Beethoven symphonies), things like Klemperer's Fidelio, Giulini's recording of Don Carlos and his two live readings of the Verdi Requiem, Brendel's live Schubert recordings and Furtwangler's wartime Berlin recordings all spring to mind.
regards, Tam
