Chaps
I have over the years bored the pants off you by mentioning that all my Hifi is stored in a large oak cabinet. This cabinet is loved by my wife because it is also used to store other things which are hidden from view including about 250/300 LP's...I can be bothered to count. This number will increase because I am slowly but surely increasing my stock with mainly Jazz and classical records. I have purchased about 50 already this year.
I am hoping to persuade my wife that the cabinet should be replaced by a Hutter stand in order to bring about sonic gain etc. I have yet to pick the right moment when she is in a receptive mood, but i am going to get the Hutter even if its the last thing I do.
One of the points she is bound to raise is "what are you going to do with those LP's". I have two options as far as I can see. These being
1. Store them in my study where visual asthetics is not a problem either on a shelf or in a crate and just pick them out when I want to use them. The main disadvantage of this being that I have to wander upstairs everytime I want to play a record. But it will help keep me fit and I am prepared to do it.
2. Find a practical and attractive way of storing them in the lounge. This is my preferred option. Sue will not accept an open shelf because it is a dust trap.
Does anyone have any ideas on an attractive way to store LP's.......I dont mind spending money on this because I am also a fussy old git when it comes to appearance.
Many thanks
Mick

mick,
dunno whether this helps, but i had special purpose shelves built in our garage to store more than 2000 lp's. before than, i used to have some very nice lp racks made of plastic -- i think i bought them via hifi news. each rack had 5 compartments each storing something like 20 lps, so i had something like 10 of them -- and you could stack them -- i would keep 2 near by for records i play often -- the rest were in the garage. i have given away all of them now, except one, which i just keep for the memory...
sorry i ramble on a bit...
enjoy...

Mick,
I store my LPs, about 400 of them, in a couple of yew veneered ex hi-fi cabibets. Each is fitted with a pair of doors and they are really pieces of furniture rather than hi-fi gear.
Internal dimensions are about 500mm wide, 400mm deep, and 800mm tall. Each cabinet has two shelves and each shelf holds about 125 LPs.
I also have a couple of matching book-case cabinets, again fitted with doors and finished in yew, with 3 shelves for storing CDs.
I bought them about 5 years ago at Camp Hobson in Newbury - not exactly the other side of the planet to where you live (sorry - other end of the earth if you're a menber of the Flat earth Society). They also came in mahogany, cherry etc etc and my wife put ornaments and pictures on top of them. You would never guess what was inside until you looked.
If I can figure out how to do it, i'll post a couple of pictures.
Cheers
Don

Available in several finishes, can get glass doors, will hold upwards of 1000 lps, so room to expand. It's a very nice shelf for lps. Alternatively, go custom.

Mick -
Hummm...If you succeed in getting the Hutter for the gear, would that free up room in the cabinet you now have for records? Another alternative is to sell off records that are not of interest to you anymore. I did this and it made the difference between ditching the turntable and all records because it took up too much space and keeping it. At least for now...
Also keep in mind that records are heavy - like books. So if you go with a modular (crate) option, think smaller crates with fewer records per crate if you will be moving them around.

Ikea LACK (4 shelves)
These shelves are narrow in LP storage mode so you can stand 1,2 or more side by side on end. Available in black (cheapest), beach, birch etc. Fixed shelves so much more solid than the adjustable types (eg BONDE). Only holds about 150-200 LPS, so use more than one or split the collection in two with "live" disks in the listening room and the rest somewhere else ("archive").
Just a suggestion

Ikea Ivar - cheap, cheerful and fairly solid (once loaded up with LPs) although it looks pretty flimsy and isn't that bonny.
When I get a new place, I'm planning to look for a large living room with big windows. If the windows aren't floor-to-ceiling, I'll get some window seats made; I reckon that the height of an LP plus a few inches, plus nice seating would make it worth spending that bit more on getting it right. But, for now, the Ivar remains...
I'm also contemplating some arrangement to hide the multi-layers of Mana - whilst Phase one up to four look okay, beyond that the Mana tends to look a bit too industrial and so I've plans to ultimately have a little cupboard or something made up to place the 6-tier at Phase 11 (which it will be soon - a hit of 6 phases in one go - eat that, Hutter boys )

Following Andrew's advice (but don't blame Andrew if it doesn't work !) a picture of my LP storage should follow - hopefully
