DVD5 Firmware updates
Posted by: Ancipital on 20 July 2005
I should have my sticky mitts on a pair of the firmware updates CD's which I should have applied within the next couple of hours.
I've been told it fixes pretty much all the known outstanding issues.
I'll post a comment later on how it went and what difference it has made to the operation of the player.
On an aside, I've finally bitten the bullet and have ordered the Naim video cable. This should be an interesting comparison to my current 5 metre £8 cable I'm currently using.

It would be interesting to see your results steve. I had my done a while back and now, when you switch the unit on from the rear it comes up with REG 0. you have to press play then stop and then everything is fine. (obviously not right).
My dealer also did his demo unit at the same time and his did the same with the REG 0 etc.
As for bugs etc, i didnt really have any on my replacement player. But what i did have was a speaker settings menu which was obviously for the dvd audio board. Now for some reason this setting has disappeared from the menu without a trace!!!! This all happened before the update.
Still, it works fine now ( at the moment)
Regards
Jason.

Upgrade went pretty well, only one iffy moment when I had an "incorrect region" message on a disc but that was more my fault - after another reset it was fine.
Jason, I get the Reg bit up when I reset the player to defaults which I had to do twice but it never displayed when I power cycled the device - When I first turn on the player after a reset I get "Reg -" to which I enter 0. I will try a power cycle on it this evening to see what it does. If yours just displays Reg 0 I wouldn't worry about it.
I haven't had a good chance to play yet but I'll find out this evening. One of the problems I used to have is with the Deep Space 9 DVDs casusing issues with the player, I'll find out later if that's still the case.

Steve & Jason,
when you update the DVD5, after you do the strongly recommended reset, it will ask you to set the region. You need to set a particular region (i.e. 1-6) or else it will keep asking you at each power cycle. Note that at this stage you cannot set it to Region 0. If you try to do this it won't hold it.
Further information on Region coding and changing region can be obtained from your dealer or distributor... Sorry I am unable to tell you more here.

So far, all is looking good. Discs are ejecting without an issue and so far haven't had any random subtitles turn up - with the original firmware did see though that if you cycled through the subtitle languages twice the off option reappeared.
Haven't had a lot of time to properly check everything out but should be able to over the weekend but looking good so far

Getting on with it fine - works without a flaw now, seems to integrate better with the AV2 as well.
Other noticeable things are the sound has improved and seems much richer and deeper so that's an added bonus (no DC1 yet). In fact, was just watching a DTS soundtrack film and had to lower the AV2 volume to 32 to try not to annoy my neighbours!
Niceguy, I've sorted out my player to start on Region 2 now but if you need any help with configuration after the firmware update drop me a mail on ancipital1968 at that micro$oft site hotmail.com and I'll see if I can help with any issues you may be having.
On an aside, put on the Naim video cable. Wooo! It's made a helluva difference in definition, clarity and vibrancy in the picture. Unluckily, my tv support just YUV and not HDMI or RGBHV but for it was still worth it for the difference.

The firmware update sorted out my problem ejecting disks, all eject first time now. Also now if you FF you can press play and it goes back to play, rather than press pause twice.

How do you get these updates?
Posted on: 27 July 2005 by Ancipital
Bob
You will need to talk to your dealer as they will either update the firmware for you or provide the 2 cd's for you to do it yourself.
Bear in mind though that doing the update yourself will mean following the instructions to the absolute letter and rather more aggro for yourself if it goes wrong.
I wanted the update ASAP so I ran the updates myself as it would've meant waiting until I had time to go to my dealers or arranging for them to come to me to perform the update.
Regards,
Steve.

I now have the 2 upgrade disk from my dealer. Before proceeding does anyone have any cautions. I definitely want to do this right!
Especially since my unit has had no problems, other than the drawer opening slowly at times.

I think it's just a case of put the disk in and go and shouldn't take too long. I think the AV2 firmware upgrade is the tricky one.

Don't know if you have done the upgrade yet but, be patient, respect the procedure and it should be ok.

I had no problems at all doing the update myself - I followed the instrucions to the letter. My DVD5 is a LOT more stable since the update, have not had to reboot at all. See Richards comments concerning region settings above though.

I did as you said ... it took quite a while for anything to happen (flashing screen) on first disk, but I was patient and everything went well.
One item that is not in the instructions ... after you install 2nd disk and switch the DVD5 back on, the display panel shows "REG ". I entered "1" (for North America), then finish by pressing the clear button for 5 seconds ... "RESET" displayed as it is supposed to.
So, no problems. I am no interested in seeing how it works now. Currently playing a DVD-A disk without any problems.

Good advice Steve.....
It is usually advisable to get your dealer to update the unit. If you dont follow the instructions to the letter (as steve has suggested), you may end up having to send your player back to naim HQ to have the EEPROM re-romulated.
Do not under ANY circumstances turn the unit off whilst doing an update on the DVD5. The instructions tell you when to power cycle the player.

Hi there,
Yes, was wondering when the next firmware updates for the AV2 and DVD5 are scheduled for also.
And any hints on what they may contain ?

Heres a few pointers:
Not having to wait 15 seconds for the tray to open from stanby, as it takes longer than 15 seconds to open a dvd box put it on the player and press play.
Slow access times etc.
Anyone else wanna add?

Not sure if it's been reported or not (I've been lazy and posted without a search...), but I've noticed that I can sometimes get no sound after pausing a DVD, reversing to a particular point, and then pressing play. Seems to happen with Dolby Digital soundtracks (that I've noticed).

Firstly can I presume you are both actually using DVc0101/112 firmware (released last july)
I have noted these issues and have passed them on.
