DVD5 Firmware updates

Posted by: Ancipital on 20 July 2005

I should have my sticky mitts on a pair of the firmware updates CD's which I should have applied within the next couple of hours.

I've been told it fixes pretty much all the known outstanding issues.

I'll post a comment later on how it went and what difference it has made to the operation of the player.

On an aside, I've finally bitten the bullet and have ordered the Naim video cable. This should be an interesting comparison to my current 5 metre £8 cable I'm currently using.

There's the other bug, where you play a DVD and the AV2 comes up with 2/0 as the processing mode. Turn the AV2 off/on and it comes back up procesing the exact same stream as 3/2.1.

if you pause the film and then unpause it, does it re-lock to 3/2.1?

Nope.

Only happens infrequently, say once every 20 odd films.

Yep. But im not running it through any Naim av equipment.

I also stumbled over the same problem that Roy describes.
The main difference in my setup is: I don't have a DVD5 (jet?). It's still an old Sony DVP-NS900V (Scart interlaced RGB direct to TV and digital sound over Coax to AV2). So I think this could be more AV2 related?

It only happens rarely, but then it won't recognise the multichannel sound and displays 2.0. After sending the AV2 to standby and back on, it recognised correctly 3/2.1 from the same track. It happened, when switching different languages from the same DVD while the movie played on.

Pausing or even stopping the movie did not help in this case.

Happy listening

excuse my ignorance, but how do you tell what firmware you're running?

So, that's interesting. It looks like there's 2 or 3 of us that have experienced that bug where the AV2 mill interpret a 5.1 signal as 2/0, until you turn the AV2 off/on again and then it processes the exact same signal as 3/2.1.

Another one for the to be looked at list me thinks.

...press and hold OSD button on remote for about 6 sec.

Yes, we are looking in to this issue already.

(The previous on was AV2)
DVD firmware is:- press and hold "prog"

Last weekend I had a case, where switching the input back and forth was enough to get back 3/2.1 from stuck with 2.0. But sometimes this is not sufficient...
Posted on: 06 February 2006 by AV@naim
Do you still actually get 5.1 surround, even tho it is displaying 2.0?
Posted on: 07 February 2006 by Adrian F.
Hmm, it must have been stereo only... I normally keep my displays off. It sounded "flat", so I checked with the OSD button.
Posted on: 07 February 2006 by Roy Donaldson
No, it only seems to run as 2.0. When you power the AV2 off and back on again and it picks up 5.1, then the sound is noticably different.

So, here's another one for you. I've been playing on/off for about 4 hours a PCM Stereo signal, with DPL II processing on into the AV2. This is into a coax digital input.

I've now gone back over to my normal 2 channel analog input (the TV) and it still leaves the LED's on the front on for processing PCM as DPLII, even though it's an analog input now.

PLII/NEO:6 matrix modes are available on analogue inputs also. did you have it set to PLII previously, before you used the coax input?

(using direct mode on an analogue inputs will no utilise the DSP chips).

Any news on the dvd firmware yet???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Posted on: 15 February 2006 by Roy Donaldson
Yes, I use the analog input for my TV all the time, so it will always be set to DPLII. I then switched to the digital coax on PCM with DPLII processing and then when I switched back to the TV input, it kept the lights on the same as when it was processing the PCM signal.

When you say PCM you mean it shows DDPLII and stereo light? I have just checked mine out here, but it appears to function as normal. Will give it a worl, tomo
