Interest in Hifi- is it age related?

Posted by: Noopz on 10 November 2007

Lo chaps,

One thing I seem to notice on this forum is that the vast majority of memebers are 40+.

The only logical things I can think of are:

1) They got into hifi when it was a much bigger scene (20+ years ago) and are still into it

2) Like most Ferrari owners, if your hair isn't grey you most likely aren't in a position to afford it

I only wonder as I'm 25 and there doesn't seem to be many members here around my age.

Any thoughts?

Not for a while. That takes me back. Very funny!

My brothers got that sketch on record believe it or not. I wonder what it'll sound like on my Gramophone. Smile.

I agree with Noopz, younger Hifi enthusiasts are a dying breed - I am 30 and am the only person I know out of my social circles who has interest in higher end hifi. Most people I know are using MP3 driven systems now even the ones that were buying seperates in their early 20's - I admit I envy the convenience and would love a suitable solution.

I bought my first Naim system the day my graduate loan cleared Smile - I had a naim brochure on pinned to my notice board throughout studying.

I envied the convenience of Mp3 players too. Until the day I actually heard a download of an Mp3 file. Reminded me of a roasted marshmallow,.... hard and crispy on the outside, soft and mushy on the inside.

I grew up surrounded by really good hi fi. I care f#@ck all what younger people are doing.

By the way, I've got a tee shirt with a turntable design on it. I always get comments from younger people about it, they swear they're into records too.

Noopz,

I am 24, my dad bought me my first system at the age of about 14, been into it ever since. Bought a nait5 at the age of 18, when I then went on to have CD5 Nait 5 and intro2's. I dont have any mates that are into it though, they think I am mad!

I'm sorry to say that my first experience with a Linn/Naim dealer in the early '80s wasn't much different from a condescending sales staff point of view. Only it took the form of "Well what do you hear?" followed by stiffled sniggers.
Bought the LP12 anyway, and started on the path to ruin.

Just reading this thread I wonder how Noopz knows how old everyone is? I don't, and I've been here longer than him...!

Anyway, I think it's just a sign of the times that young people like junk these days. They fart around with computer games or watch some crap on telly instead of listening to music. My mates wouldn't know good music or sound quality from a nude portrait of Jessica Drake in the shower. When I was at high school, sitting in the 6th form common room, I told my makes quite excitedly that I was going out that evening to see Yehudi Menuhin (he was conducting the Halle in Hanely) and someone shrugged dismissively and said, "I've never heard of them!" He thought Yehudi Menuhin was the name of a band...!

So there we are. Young people suck, as they say in America.

This fascinating thread from last year should give an insight into the average age.

Just had a sneaky look back through that thread again.

I didn't realise I was as old as that!

i've had high end audio or one sort or another during the 15 years since i divorced. meanwhile, my son, now 20 and in college (university), has shown an interest in music reproduction AND COLLECTS VINYL. but he so far eschews high end nuance for sheer volume in his tastes.
