Trance/House Progressive Naim Stylie

Posted by: Naheed on 18 October 2002

My first real Music Forum Post, anyway I thought I'd give some insight into this genre of music.

Bore you with some background first:
For years since school/college/uni/etc... I've loved this style of music, I recall my first visit many moons ago to London (heah up lad - eeh bah gum, i used ta liv up north) - when a friend took me to Trade, which was an amazing club in its day where I got hooked (no not the batty side, but the music).

I find the way, the best DJs layer and build up the music, and the crowds into a frenzy, was such a rush, the way a DJ could flick the cross-fader and send the crown wild. For many this style of music is purely for clubs and Saturday night bursts, but for me I chill out to what many call 'hardcore' trance...

Anyway - my first 'real' hifi was a sony cd/marantz amp/mission speakers, which was good but it couldn't handle the mutli-layering these tunes have, and this got me upgrading and I found myself at Lintone Audio (Gateshead) and bought a CDi/72/flatcap/90 (not bad for a student ehh ?). I found Naim was the only combo that could handle the levels of PRaT required.

Well what about the music:
My personal favourites are most of the Global Underground (GU), Gatecrasher and Nubreed Series.

Paul Oakenfold (GU) in New York - is awesome, this guy 'was' the master, managing to blend tracks effortlessly, it wasn't just a series of banging disjointed set of tunes. This is a timeless classic which is the epitome of a simple track working into a complex tune, with lashings of PRaT.

Nick Warren (GU) - 3 CDs (Brazil, Budapest, and Amsterdam) are just as good. For me Amsterdam/Budapest are better, again Nick has the ability to read to crowd in a telekinetic way, his style is somewhat darker/moodier, but with plenty of groove.

Sander Klienenberg - NUBREED: This CD I can listen to both discs back to back, its pure class, and non-top, not full-on, but just relentless in terms of top-notch tunes mixed seamlessly together.

Deep Dish (GU) in Moscow: These guys cheat a little as they remaster some tracks, again their style is a little darker (kinda 3am style), but tracks like Escape, Night Watch, Deeper Light and Autoporno are excellent, each track builds into a frenzy of basslines, with SO much background detail.

Seb Fontaine - Prototype Series: For me this guy takes the DJ crown from Oakenfold (whos lost the plot 'starry eyed surprise !!!), anyway Seb, is another master of the decks who has managed to move away from the monotonous club routine, to provide a series that just boogies so well...

For a taster I'd suggest the samplers (no.1 and no.4) from this GU Series, which provide a taste from the spectrum of DJs.http://www.globalunderground.co.uk/buy/

Come one Naim
Why don't you guys try to crack this audio/segment, or is it that you don't want to lose your pipe 'n' slippers, over 40s image ???

Many of my friends (non-nerdy hifi ones), always comment that I'm mad spending so much money on hifi, but one listen and there hooked, be it relaxed chill-out music, or something more hardcore, the ability of naim to keep up with the tune is second to none.

Although I have most of the GU releases you list and they are very good, the problem for Naim to release material like this is that most of what you have listed are DJ mixes, not albums filled with original music by a particular artist. I can't see Naim ever doing a DJ mix album, unless there is a high profile DJ who is also a Naim fan. As for trying to find original trance artists to go on the Naim label, well you could try, but I doubt it would be the kind of exposure most of them would be looking for.

John - i mean Naim advertising their gear (cds/552/etc...), not Paul.S. mixing with a set of LP12/Aro's razz , though that would be rather fun to see.

Naheed,

Completely out my depth with this stuff, but is GU013 Sasha/Ibiza any good?

One of the best. Sasha is a great DJ with really seamless mixing skills. Also try the John Digweed one in Hong Kong, my favourites are the Danny Tengalia ones (London and Athens).

Danny tengalia is a bit more in the New York style of house, more funk, more tribal styles.

Generally though I would say the house thing in London is not less prominent and is more a 'rest of UK' thing - when I lived in Scotland all this tech/house stuff was all over the place club wise but other styles were hard to find. Although having siad all that Turnmills on a Friday is still pretty cool. The London scene is really all garage nowadays frown

Also Jungle/Drum and Bass is big in London and that really gives any system a work out. The expert in all of this stuff is Steve Caterall - steve where are you?

Thanks Dev,

That brings me on to my next question - the reason I raised it, was that some years ago a friend of mine recommended the Northern Exposure CDs (both 1 & 2). I like them both, but have never found anything similar.

Any suggestions?

Hi David,

Thanks Dev,

Lots of recommendations which I will investigate - maybe after getting a few of them I might understand your previous posting.

Sasha, hmmm, try Oakenfold In New York (not Oslo), its a classic, its not full-on and is sortta relaxing, also try Sander Kleinenberg (NUBREED). The new James Lavelle GU release is crap !!!

Global Underground and also Gatecrasher have an online sale at the moment.

Other new releases to speak of are Electric Calm (GU) and Satoshi Tomiie (NUBREED) - more progressive trance.

If mix CDs are your thing (I prefer unmixed, but there you are) try the Deep Dish / Yoshitoshi versons - they really groove you and move you.

I have a few of the Global Underground / Journeys by DJs / X-mix series, and if I really like a track, I seek it out on vinyl to hear it properly.

Also good for the car, on motorway journeys - it soaks the time up!

over 40, slippers, but no pipe.
