SCAM!!! WARNING!!!

Posted by: effinity on 21 August 2003

Beware!!

The scams continue!!

These 135's for auction on Ebay are not the seller's to sell, nor are they in his/her possession.

The seller/con man has basically lifted the photo's and wording from an auction that ended unsold on 02/08/03

I do know the owner of those serial numbers and this is definitely not his auction!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3042373651&category=3280

I have informed ebay (after an excruciating trip through their feedback procedures!) and hopefully they will pull the auction, but in the meantime I felt it right and proper to issue this warning to fellow Naimistas, not that I think any of you are daft enough to fall for it, especially considering this ebayers feedback!

Add to that the fact that he/she is pre approving bidders/buyers (cheeky git), for no other reason but to keep tabs on whistle blowers, particularly the bona fide seller of the auction ending unsold on 02/08, but at least you could warn friends/colleagues etc who may be seeking your advices.

A source of wry humour is looking at 'sellers other items' and imagining where, (it may just be my imagination of course!)and how, the 'grand auto' haul came from.

Anyway, mus'nt get too libelous.

Because it is No Reserve someone's desire may just get the better of them.

I also got in touch with 'New Scotland Yard' re online fraud, they said all I could do was what I had already done by informing ebay

Regards to all

Steve

I think you are being a bit paranoid if you suspitions are only based on the fact that he has copied photos and descriptions from another seller. Before I obtained a digital camera I did it all the while. I am at present trying to sell a Sisters of Mercy LP, the photo is my work but the description is not.

Your point about the other auctions does seem funny. Why would a GPS system be offered for sale in the UK and the description state it includes discs for Washington and Oregan.

fatcat -

This bit seems pretty conclusive...

Precisely jayd!

And your point, fatcat re GPS etc on 'sellers other items'

The main overiding warning though, as its true many people cut and paste for convenience, and apart from the serial numbers and the fact that i know where those amps are right now, is that, in true, blatant con artist style see the listing on ebay and observe:-

'Note: This listing is restricted to pre-approved bidders or buyers only.'

That is the way that he/she will become alerted to the possibility that the true owner or seller of these amps will try to make contact.

Also by keeping bidders user ID private it prevents the true owner from contacting those bidders and warning them.

Unless ebay move quickly there is a good chance that money will get paid out and the curtains will close behind this geezer with a 'what! who me? nah! must have got lost in transit sorrrrrrrreeeeeee!.

Or however that sounds in a Los Angeles accent, because if you look at the feedback and view the two items bought/sold that are available within the time period to see, it will give you a clue as to where this person might be based and the extent of the odds for or against getting caught.

Steve, I was agreeing with you. It is a bit dodgy that GPS is being sold in UK when it has software for use in Ogegan. (Jayd, maybe you should bid for this, JOKE).
Did you think I was having a go at you?

You seem pretty convinced you are correct. If you really wanted to stop him, you could copy his photos and descriptions place an auction on ebay with a few notes indicating it not a true auction. IE in the main description place the words NOT FOR SALE. If somebody does bid you cab cancel the auction at any time.

Good Luck

Fatcat,

I understand, I just did'nt finish my sentence in my earlier reply.

I was going to wait to see what ebay did before doing something like you suggested, i'll give it a couple of days.

prefer to be listening to music though.

Please tell me if you are bored with this now people but here is the email reply received from my friend who actually owns these amps when he emailed the conman seller to ask about shipping costs, here goes.

"Reply 21/08/03

"I am located in Spain now. I moved across to Spain last year when the
company i work for offered me an assignment in Madrid. Please let me know if you ar
really interested because i can end the auction more early for you. How can
you prove me that you are a serious buyer ?
Also i need to know how much do you want to spend on it. If you will give me
a good price i will support the shipping costs.
Thank you and i waiting your reply
Have a nice day! "

Just to put this thread to bed and leave a clue as to what people should be looking out for when dealing with a potential scam.

This is the email received from the scammer of the amps in question when a friend enquired about shipping:-

And Finally the one and only email from Ebay, but at least it is good to know that they actually do respond to information they receive in connection with potential fraud:-

"Hello,

Thank you for alerting us to this listing. We have reviewed it and taken
the appropriate action.

We really appreciate the terrific help from users like yourself.
Together, we can all help keep eBay a safe and fun place to trade.

Best wishes,

I feel that the more people are aware of these patterns of potential criminal behaviour the better.

I think that Ebay is a marvellous tool from which we can all benefit and i'm willing to risk saying we all have a vested interest in it's success and how we can make personal use of it as an upgrade phenomena equalling at least a mains spur! Wink
