HDX questions ?

Posted by: rich2513 on 04 July 2010

Been trying to sift through the archives but conversations and long and emotions are high Smile so it might be easier to get a quick answer with a new thread now that the dust has settled.

1. With regard to playback specifically on the HDX, is there an appreciable difference in sound between WAV and FLAC (at whatever compression level). If there is, how big is that difference. (HDX user Malcolm sterward in a current magazine column seems to think so).

2. Has anyone tested a wav file that has been flac'ced, then transcoded back to wav. presumably it sounds exactly the same as the orignial ripped wav ?

3. You can't tag wav's but presumably the HDX uses folder names and file names to organise and display wav music ? Do you need a little jpeg in said folder for the album art ?

4. Is there any difference in sound between a CD ripped by EAC on a pc/mac and the exact same CD ripped by the HDX. If so, how big is that difference ?

The bottom line question is should one rip their entire cd collection to wav or to flac level 0 ? I only really want to do it once and not multiple times Razz

thanks for any help

Yes there is a difference. Have only compared at compression 5 and 0. Differences are not huge but they are there.

Seems to

You can tag wavs but it's not so common as tagging FLACS. HDX uses folder structure and or AMG data to organise and display. Yes, jpg in folder.

IMHO the HDX and EAC produce the best sounding rips. I have no idea why files that compare as identical sound different but I'm 100% sure they do.

Bottom line: That's a decision you should make after considering all the facts and doing all the listening.

I rip to wav via HDX primarily, and store virtually all my hi-res music in wav also even if it arrived as a FLAC.

I'm also certain that some people will think I'm mad, confused, fooling myself :>Winker

Desktop Client for the PC gives you an explorer like view so you can browse through folders

Hi Steve,

many thanks!
So this is a new feature Naim implemented in the HDX release?...If so, you don't need UPNP support....THAT makes me think of a HDX again:-)

ok, Axel answered....it's a server, not a client...

The HDX is a UPnP server on the network for UPnP renderers.

The HDX doesn't need a UPnP server it searches out playable music on the network and lists it for selection either for immediate play or for putting into playlists.

IMHO on its own it is a superb music player but with a DAC and a PS it's the best sound I've ever heard from any computer audio/streaming solution. Nothing I've heard comes close to it's ability to let music shine through.

Hope this clarifies
