Recap by (Naim)dealer, can it be done ?
Posted by: Alco on 18 February 2003
Howdy Y'all,
I was just wondering... I 've been visiting this forum for a few years now, and I've read quite some positive words from people who've sent their Naim gear to Salisbury for a recap.
Now, I reckon that many (most) Naim gear will sound good even after 10 or more years of daily use, but I can also imagine a recap would bring it up to near new conditions and it would give some sonic improvement.
But... (there's always a but someweher

) for somebody who doesn't have its original box and not living in the UK, it's not very tempting to find a suitable package, sent it of to Salisbury and miss it for almost 2 months, or maybe even more. (

... the horror)
Besides that, I've seen some price examples, and imho it seems pretty expensive!
(sorry, we Dutch people always seem to complain about prices

)
Now, I'll get to the point. Isn't it possible to let a Naim dealer do a recap ?
This would be much quicker, easier, and cheaper alternative for many Naim users.
Greetings,
Alco

The Naim distributor in Holland should have the facility and expertise to do it. Call him,
Netherland Naim distributorEmmanuel
All opinions are my own, and reflect those of the organisation i work for, even if not stipulated.

Alco,
Contacted Phonologic the other day for a recap of a Hicap. They are authorised by Naim to do recaps.Just give them the ser.nr. of the unit and they'll sort out the costs.
Regards,
Rob.

Ah, thanx for the info guys.
Not that I'm in a rush for a recap, but if Phonologic can do the trick, I bet it'll save a lot of time and (shipping)costs.

Greetings,
Alco

If this can be of any indication in prices, I sent my 72/Hi/140 to Salisbury through my London dealer (I live in the far east now) last year and cost me £450. I would be cheaper to send it direct to Naim I think. But if your nearest dealer is up for it, save your money for other upgrades.
Regards
Mat

Really? My recollection is they do not perform the recap, all they do is forward the equipment to Salisbury. I had an email exchange about this with Phonologic's Helen about a year ago, and her cost quote was not cheap, and (bless her) her advice was don't fix it when it ain't broken. (So what I did was get a s/h Hi of a more recent date.)
So let's get to the bottom of this, as we seem to be in a rather disadvantageous position out here on the cold Continent when it comes to being serviced. Richard any comments?

I thought it would be best to get to the bottom of this myself, so I e-mailed Helen Willemse of Phonologic, and, sad to say, she said they don't do recaps or any kind of servicing themselves.
So there's two options: hand the stuff to your dealer, who will hand it to the distributor, who will send it to Salisbury. The second option is send it to Salisbury yourself, which would certainly be my option with easy pieces like a Hi-Cap or a power amp.
Sending a Hi-Cap back and forth per UPS is about 150 Euros. I have heard of folks (Hakan from Denmark, for one) who have sent a Hi-Cap per regular mail - it's cheaper, and those things are built like tanks.

Given the cost of flights at the mo', you could prolly make a weekend of it, and still save money over UPS.

Absolutely - if Naim would be willing (and able) to fix the recap on a Saturday afternoon, hopping over on the plane with a tired old Hi-Cap would be just perfect.
