Thanks for the tip! But I could only get AVRO Klassic at 256 kbps? And the dropouts made the station virtually unliestenable! How do you dial AVRO light classic radio?

I listen mostly to radioIO. They have literally scores of different genres.

Many thanks!

hi,
i use Avro light classical with 320k and it works without dropouts..
for linn ds, you have to enter the radiostation on radiotime.com (need user account)....after this, the stations are visible in kinsky destop sw (from here, you can play your nas files or radio)

AVRO 320k is really incredible quality. The best radio for me is however radioio, especially radioio Real Jazz with Mike Metheny at 192k Smile)

I was able to finally tune into Avro Light Classical High Definition on my Uniti yesterday. Here's how :

1. You need to first register with Naim. VTuner
http://naim.vtuner.com/setupap...&sAuthErr=sp1&sAuth=
This involves providing the MAC number of the Uniti and then registering in the normal way.

2.Open the Avro Light Classical station I used :
http://radiotime.com/Search.as...%20light%20classical

3.The radio then plays in iTunes ( or whatever your music default is). Right click (if using a PC) on the station and under "Get Info" or "Properties" make a note of the station URL ( please note, this is really important - you need the actual station URL not, for example, the Radio Time URL). Highlight this URL and copy it, Ctrl C.

4. Back to Naim VTuner. Here you can add a station. Self explanatory but the key points are to paste the station URL you have copied from your music browser, including the http://
Also, make sure you have selected AAC under "Type".

5. Switch on the Uniti, Iradio and scroll to "Added Stations" and there you will find Avro Light Classical. You can then save as a preset.
That's it.

I was amazed to stumble upon Naim V.tuner yesterday whilst scrolling through the Forum. No mention from Naim anywhere that I can see about this feature which I find strange !!
What also puzzles me is why I have to go through such a procedure to add Avro Light Classical to the Uniti ( it is not listed as a "standard" station) when i can find it immdediately on Wunder radio iPhone App - £2,000 v £2.00 !!!

Hi Ralf

Sound was superb and Info button confirmed that music was being streamed at 320K. Just wish the dear old BBC would get their finger out and do likewise!!

Hi Martin

Thanks for your setup instructions! Following your instructions (with some adaptations since my pc is Windows rather than Apple), I am almost there! I can see "AVRO Light Classical" on the Added Stations but it says "Can't play!". I think it is because I have not managed to get the proper url. When I right click and go to Page Info, I see the Address which is: http://radiotime.com/Search.as...%20light%20classical

I think that this is incorrect but I cannot see any other streaming info. Could you help?

Thanks in advance!

@ NaimUnT: The numeric address for the mp3 stream of AVRO Light Classical HD is: http://145.58.33.95:8096

I add the IP addresses of the mp3 streams of two 320k stations I would recommend given their sound quality:
Bart'ok Radio (classical): http://212.92.78.75:2008

Happy Radio Caroline 259 Gold : http://85.114.130.208:8253

BTW : I miss the possibility to define a minimum stream rate for iRadio stations. Alternatively one could imagine the stations being sorted according to their stream rate, at least within each genre. This latter possibility (available on my hifidelio music server) helped me to discover i.a. the three stations mentioned above.

adca: Thanks a million! Got it! Managed briefly to hear AVRO Light Classical but the connection is intermittent. The buffer goes up and down and when it is down, I lose the station! I am using wired ethernet but the cable is cat 5e. I was advised to use cat 6 at least to allow for greater and faster bandwidth transfer. Is this why I am getting intermittent audio?

Many thanks for your advice which enabled me add AVRO Light Classical! Smile

Hi NaimUnt.

Glad you got sorted following the good advice from adca. You can always get the correct station URL by right clicking in iTunes when the station is playing, click "get info" and the correct URL is there. This is crucial !!

I will also check out the other rwo stations recommended by adca.

The attached website gives details of some of the high quality stations - not perfect but it's a start :

http://www.filtermusic.net/

Regarding the intermittent connection, I cannot believe that your cable is the problem. I also use wired internet with the cable that came included with the free router, provided by my ISP. Maybe it has more to do with your Broadband speed.I am no expert on this but that is where I would start !!

Hi again NaimUNT

I just checked the URL that I used for Avro Light Classical. It is different to that provided by adca (can't think why) but works just fine :
http://shoutcast.omroep.nl:8096
Maybe that will solve your intermittent problem because this is all a black art to me !!
Good luck !

Given my own listening experience (Uniti: wireless, Hifidelio: Cat5e), I agree with Martin as to the potential cause of the problem.
Filtermusic.net is indeed a good start; however, it seems to be 128k up without any further differentiation, whereas I rather thought of 256k and/or 320k up. (see, f.i., www.shoutcast.com which offers "All/Broadband/128/56/28"). Would be nice (not necessary) to see something thelike for the Uniti.

Martin and adca: many thanks to both of you! I wasted no time calling my internet provider and the customer support confirmed that my broadband is running normally. A thought occured to me, my Uniti still runs on the version 1 firmware and has not be upgraded to the version 2. Perhaps this may explain the issues I am facing with 320 kbps internet radio.

I wasn't aware that the Uniti firmware upgrade made any difference to iRadio and so, while you should make sure to get the upgrade for other reasons, this is highly unlikely to resolve your issue.

John: thanks for sharing! I am inclined to agree with you and rather doubt that the firmware upgrade will significantly resolve the present issues with streaming of 320 kbps stations. Anyhow, my Uniti is scheduled for the upgrade anytime soon and if, unexpectantly, the issues are resolved, so much the better!

I am just very puzzled (curious even) why this is so!
Posted on: 05 May 2010 by naimUnT
Naim support just emailed me to say that the firmware upgrade will not resolve my problems. I also tried Radio Caroline (320 kbps)[thanks adca!] but problem is the same. So, it seems that my Uniti can only play 128 kbps stations! Frown

Have you tried these streams on a PC/Mac/Laptop on the same network? Do they work at full speed? This should help you identify whether the issue relates to your ISP/LAN rather than the Uniti.
John
Posted on: 06 May 2010 by naimUnT
John: Yes, I have tried the streams on my pc and it works flawlessly, no connectivity issues, just smooth stremaing of music. This is why I find it so intriguing and wonder if my Uniti may be faulty. It certainly points in that direction as it stands!

I searched the threads on Webradio connectivity problems and found this reply from Naim HQ:

"Hi,

We have noticed that in certain circumstances Uniti can drop audio from internet radio. This may be due to a combination of local network/remote server connection issues.

The poor weather may have also increased the likelyhood of problems, possibily caused by more people working from home and hence intenet quality/speed is currently reduced.

We have been looking at trying to compensate for these problems and will issue an update soon (along with 24/96 streaming playback as soon as beta testing is finished).

We apologise and will issue more information and an update as soon as we can."

I am a little confused because Stephen Hopkins advised me that the new firmware will not resolve my webradio connectivity issues. Yet, the above posts seems to suggest Naim is aware of this problem and has even committed to resolve this problem with the latest firmware. So, my question is this - has the version 2 firmware incorporated these connectivity issues? I am quite sure now that my problems have nothing to do with my router. When I stream AVRO Light Classical via my pc, I have zero connectivity issues. Can Naim please help me resolve this problem?
Posted on: 06 May 2010 by adca
naimUnT: The Uniti can play 320k streams. I cannot assess whether the version of the firmware has any impact, since my experience is limited to version 2.
As to your assumption that your device could be faulty, such can never be excluded; I'd suggest, however, you check the setup of your network first (ISP-Router-LAN/WLAN-Uniti; in my case: 20000upstream-LinksysWRT320-WLAN-Uniti; mine even worked fine when I tested a "indirect" LAN connection via the built-in switch of my Hifidelio (i.e. Linksys->Hifidelio->Uniti).

NaimUnT: I would agree 100% with adca. A fault within the Uniti cannot be excluded although I still believe this is unlikely to be the cause of your problem. In any case, if you do update to the latest firmware your dealer can presumably check out your problem at the same time. If he can stream 320k iradio on your Uniti without replicating your problem then it is eliminated from the equation. The focus then has to be on the network setup !
Hopefully, your dealer is close by !

Your PC doesn't have a problem, so provided you are connecting the PC and the Uniti to the router in the same way (i.e. both wirelessly or both wired) we know that the only difference is the actual streaming device (i.e. PC or Uniti). If you are using one wirelessly and the other wired, then this is not valid and you need to test both with the same connection type. If the Uniti is being used wirelessly, then try a wireless connection on your PC if you have one. Alternatively if you don't have one then try the Uniti wired.

If you still have dropouts on the Uniti (and not the PC) with both streamers connected in the same way, then you should try the latest firmware on your Uniti. At least then, if the Uniti still drops out you know you've tried it on the latest firmware in a known working configuration and that hasn't fixed the problem.

adca, Martin Sixsmith and Frank Abela: thanks very much for your further advice. I will upgrade my Uniti's firmware and let's see what happens after!

Connected my Squeezebox 3 Classic (with Paul Hynes linear PSU)and compared internet radio from SB3 feeding Uniti digital in (coaxial) and could not detect any discernible difference between the SB3 internet radio and the Uniti iRadio! Just sticking to the uniti iRadio would be so much easier. No extra boxes and cables!

is there such a thing as full 16/44 resolution internet radio stations? Or can they not yet stream files of this size.
