Using NaimUniti with iTunes

Posted by: arasekhi on 04 March 2010

Hi Folks,

I'm a newbie to Naim and this forum. I just purchased a NaimUniti and I'm trying to achieve the following:

- Import CDs into iTunes in a format that is high quality and that will play on the NaimUniti. I tried WAV but the usability is not good since there is no metadata and navigating to find the songs on the NaimUniti is difficult. I wanted to try Apple Lossless, but read that NaimUniti does not play this format when using UPnP.

Basically, I am looking for a way to play a lossless format that iTunes supports on the NaimUniti via UPnP that also embeds metadata (artist, genre, etc.) so I can easily navigate through my music collection.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

iTunes on Mac or Windows?

If you're happy for your Mac to be running, then use the EyeConnect UPnP server which should transcode AIFF or ALAC files into the WAV format which is compatible with the NaimUnity. There are other UPnP servers which also support transcoding - there is a comparison chart here -- http://www.rbgrn.net/content/2...ws-mac-os-x-or-linux -- which may be of help.

XBMC is free and happily acts as a UPNP server sending flac etc to the Uniti.
IN my experience Twonky is shite, eye connect is expensive and unresponsive constantly requiring restarts and ALS is limited.

Thank you for your help. I'm actually already storing all my iTunes music on a NAS drive which is UPnP capable. I did this mostly to avoid having the computer on all the time. The same disk is also being accessed by a separate Sonos system.

Thanks much! I'll look into it.

EyeConnect is free (no need to purchase if all you need is audio) and easy.
