Hallo rch,

Mike,
now you see how many Germans feel when trying to read the operationg instructions on most hifi gear, which generally come in English only even when sold in Germany.
Naim are an exception, I hasten to add.

Hermann,
Christian

Na ja, also hallo mal.

When I posted my first poll about dealer satisfaction, I made the comment " If we need to debate excellent, good, mediocre or awful so be it"
I was acutely aware that there are many, many different attributes that make an excellent dealer. However, as in many walks of life, we get one vote each and that's it! What's more, even if I made a spreadsheet with all the attributes that I felt made a good dealer, you guys, and lots of others would probably disagree. So, I posted four categories and each person has to allocate his vote according his overall feeling about his dealer's service, based on his own perception of what is important.
I did, however, also ask if anybody knew what Naim required dealers to provide by way of good service. Nobody has commented on this yet. My understanding is that the dealer must deliver and install the new equipment to the complete satisfaction of the customer. If the dealer can't get the equipment to sound right he must take it away and give the customer back his money. I'm not sure how the dealer is meant to cope with 6-week long burn-ins/warn-ups.......
I am intrigued that in Germany you have a STANDARD scoring system used throughout your school system. Is this similar to our GCSE/A Level exam system. At GCSE we mark papers A*;A;B;C;D;E and likewise at A Level we mark them A;B;C;D;E. Anything less than E is a failure but we do grade the failures as well !!
Most dealers here in UK would be pushed to score even a 5 (or an E) for their coffee!
Anyway, I'm pleased you set up your poll, altogether we now have almost 150 votes. I am sure Naim will find this interesting......
Cheers
Don

Don,
Our school grading system uses a scale from 1 to 6, going from good to bad with the 5 and the 6 being "failed" and "failed utterly", respectively. These grades also have "clear text" equivalents as given above by Christion, except that he left out 4 = ausreichend ("sufficient").
This system even extends into university.
Quite often when reading about dealers in the UK I get the feeling that we're a bit better off in Germany. Our retailers (in any industry) are not exactly famous for friendly service either, but when Germans spend big bucks on anything, they at least expect to be given a lot of time.
When I first bought a Naim system at my dealer's they did a lock-in after shop hours (three nights in a row) so I could compare electronics and speakers at my leisure. Never once did I have the feeling that the guy was pissed off at having to work extra hours (which more than made up for the filter coffee). That may have been out of the ordinary, but Nuno-style fussing and pondering is deeply ingrained in the German consumer mind, and dealers simply have to take that into account.

Nuno is the nice young man who kept this forum at 220 km/h for half a year when he couldn't make up his mind about whether to buy a Naim CD5 or some other player. He is Portuguese, but must be a German at heart.
I think most Germans are very picky when it comes to spending money, they like to get lots of information beforehand and will go to great lengths in order to get the best deal or find the best product available.
Where else could a consumer magazine called "Test" be so popular? For non-Germans: This is a magazine that tests consumer products and grades them; manufacturers will take pride in a good review and it is not uncommon to find a bottle of olive oil or nappies with a label that says "Test März 2003: Qualitätsurteil sehr gut".

I think we have the same type of magazine here called Which? brought out by the Consumers organization. I beleive its handy if looking at white goods, ie. washing machines, tumble driers , fridges etc but useless when it comes to HI FI. It's really all objective with a thousand measurements but no listening sessions.

Ah Syd,
You're right, I forgot about "Which". But I bet "Which" don't test nappies! Or mineral waters, bicycle locks, deodorants and toothbrushes ...

No excuses.
I just thought that I would troll the three " dealer satisfaction" polls one more time to try to increase the vote count.
At present it stands at 148.
68 exceptional
45 good
17 mediocre
18 awful
That is about 75% exceptional/good
or about 25% mediocre/awful
Depends whether you're an optimist or a pessimist !!
VOTE NOW

Don,
one example of a German dealer. I called a dealer a couple of days ago to get a demo of CDS3. This guy told me that the guys who manage this isnt available that day but he noticed my phone number. The other guy should call back to make an appointment. Nothing happens so far (since a week).
I once want to get a demo of ATC. A dealer quite near to me stocked that stuff. Got a demo and said it wasnt was Iexpected. He replied that he would to a 'real' setup and would call back to get the 'right' demo. Its more than 2.5 years ago. He naver alled back.
It makes me thinking about the service of Naim dealers again. A CDS3 isnt a cheap product even an ATC speaker. Dont know whats going on.
Cheers,
Hermann

Hermann,
Thanks for the comments,
Fortunately in Naim/Linn hifi, my dealers have all been excellent. In other commodities however, I have had the same sort of experiences you described with Naim and ATC dealers.
I am still waiting for a call from one London hifi dealer to listen to a Krell set-up.....more than 4 years and I did 'remind' him two or three times before I gave up.
My view is, of course, that if the dealer can't be bothered with you BEFORE he makes a sale, it is quite possible that he won't be too bothered with you AFTER he makes a sale........but at least you have got the warning ! They certainly wouldn't make it as second-hand car dealers....
Cheers
Don

Don,
That dealer will get another call to see how he reacts.
Absolutely right you're warned and I'm going to call dealers only twice. But it seems very odd with dealers where I live.

Thomas,
Thanks for your comment. Please read my comment about the service again. I said the service is ok as other confirmed. The mentioned dealer isnt the only one I tried but he's the best of all.
Never ever said something about the German distributor. Your service is excellent. As a Naim customer of more than 25 years I know what I'm talking about.
As for the demo of CDS3 a dealer confirmed that I can listen it at his studio this week but still waiting of a call back since a couple of days.
I'll be definitetly at the Frankfurt show.
Cheers,
Hermann
