Xmas Music for My Wife

Posted by: Chunny Nochubb on 06 December 2006

Help please - she wants Corinne Bailey Rae and some similar sounding French woman who's latest CD we saw advertised on the TV, but did not get the name of.
Otherwise its another Katie Manure, I tried searching in Amazon under "Bland" but only got Bobby Blue and he is definitely not her cup of tea.

Was it

Madeline Peyroux

I saw Ms Peyroux a couple of days ago. She is American but does speak and sing French. And gets my personal recommendation.

Norah has a new album early next year.....

I think you'll find she's Canadian (hence the name... Winker).

And if you say being Canadian makes her 'American' I'll get cross.

This must be the fella - thanks very much all.
You never know I might even like it too.

Half The Perfect World is a jolly nice album. Not challenging, not dynamic but nice.

If you want another 'French' record, I'd recommend 'Le Fil' by Camille.

Of the Madeline Peyroux albums, they have gone steadily downhill since her debut in 1996 - as so often seems to be the case.

WARNING - my 73 year old mum likes Ms Peyroux. This is not a recomendation.

Half the Perfect World is, for me at least, an incredibly ironic title.

Yes, Ms Peyroux has a charming voice but she is ultimately so bland. The half that is missing is some passion, some feeling some emotion . .

Peyroux is Billie Holiday on Prozac; the voice but all emotion numbed.

While a bit off your discussion line I recommend the Windham Hill Records "Winter Solstice" series of albums. Not being a fan of Christmas standards I do like the holiday season themed Solstice series. This series of records has mostly acoustic numbers mostly without vocals and only the occaisional traditional song instead of being a rehash collection of the same Christmas songs that we've all heard a zillion times before. These are an excellent alternative for those of us who are tired of the same Christmas songs being performed by every popular star.

Chunny

I would advise skipping maddy and going for beautiful, simplistic, emotional, jazz lite, sultry, voice to die for.................

One of mine and my wife's favourite albums of the year.

listen here

Highly recommended on this forum

Diccus, I agree ... Lizz Wright's Dreaming Wide Awake is a very fine album, and I much prefer it to her first. I also prefer it to Cassandra Wilson's albums covering similar musical ground.

By the way, if you dig Lizz, you should check out the album ... Til Then by Danilo Perez, on which Lizz sings two songs, one of which is one of my all-time favorites: Joni Mitchell's The Fiddle and the Drum ... of course Joni's version is a capella, and stunning (not to mention even more politically apropos now than when she wrote it 30 something years ago). I had always wanted to add some chordal accompaniment to it (not that it needs it, but it's been just sitting there unaccompanied, taunting me) but Danilo beat me to it, and how! Fantastic harmonization and a wonderful performance from Lizz.

Besides the title track, which Lizz sings, the rest of the album is instrumental and beautiful ... if you like good music, that is.

I agree with Scott, but admittedly mostly for the reason that I contributed a track, Simple Psalm, to Winter Solstice 2.

I urge you all to heed Scott's very wise recommendation ... my daughter's college fund thanks you! Big Grin

Katie Melua - a very bland, middle of the road and boring singer. But then again my opinion is only my opinion and all that...

Ahh - the one who goes on about how many bikes there are in China. Yes, she's crap. I wouldn't mind nobbing her though!

Respect to Melua. If she goes half way round the world, counts arl the bikes in the second biggest country that shows some commitment to her art.

Earwicker, I sure she was thinking about you every step of the way Winker

Diccus

I thought that 99 Red Balloons caper was clever too, like guessing sweeties in a jar.

Yeah, well, you never know when your luck's going to change...! Eek

IMO/from my experience of wives get her what she wants. You can carry on enjoying what you want/maybe opening her ears etc.

Ms Melua IMO is an excellent young singer/writer/guitarist/pianist and I buy released/download unreleased Melua when I can.

Her song in new Beatrix Potter film is lovely too.

Although there are bonkers women around, from my experience usually many of them are right, and if we used their ears/biases when attempting to buy overpriced audio-boxes we would save a bundle.

A quick trip to Tesco to get
1. Robbie Williams Rudebox
2. Lionel Richie and Commodores. Definitive collection.
3. Julio Iglesias Romantic classics.

Job done.

Or how about, errrr, "French Record", by the McGarrigle sisters. Selections of numbers in French from their other records, all very fine and highly recommended.

Pete.

I'm lucky - although my other half has a couple of Simply Red CDs (hangovers from the late 80s and early 90s, long before she came into my life), she generally has excellent taste. Her big musical heros are Jarvis Cocker, Mark E Smith and Lee Hazelwood.

I've therefore got her Jarvis's new album, plus Grotesque (After The Gramme) by the mighty Fall, and the Fall Peel Sessions box set, and I imagine this will end up being the soundtrack this Xmas.
