Forum Rugby Club - new season, new thread

Posted by: JWM on 03 September 2008

Well boys, new season about to start. But let's think already about the end...

Just to keep you boys keen, let's pretend for a moment it might not be another Tigers v Wasps final, let's pretend that anyone could be in it, even Glaws...

Before long we'll have the chance to book ahead for seats (whoever's in the final). Forum Rugby Club day out at Twickers? Hifi morning. Beer. Rugby (a whole row together, around the half way line). More beer. Pie. (Or perhaps a corporate tailgate party? Mark?). More beer.

There's potential in this...

No, just luck! I've only just logged on.

Seriously, good luck to Tigers in the final, I'll be flying the flag for the English team.

Sound, but whoever win`s it will be a cracking game with either team deserving the win and there will be no shame for the loser

Thanks for the extra ticket for JWMjnr, and enjoy the Specials! Smile

Just booked a parking spot Smile driving being the best option for us now, both as jnr no longer qualifies us for Family Railcard and my pills mean I can't have a beer anyway Frown Guess we'll just have to 'drink in' the atmosphere (geddit).

Don't know exactly where yet, as James (JamieWednesday) has still got them. But it's around the halfway line quite close to the line, I believe.

After last year's Final, which he and Mark (Chillkram) -both Pests fans- and I went to together, we decided to go together again this year, whoever was playing. So James speculatively booked three good tickets sometime before Christmas whilst they were still affordable. Mark (Chillkram), has now kindly given his to my lad to come with me to watch Tigers in the Final again this year, but hopefully winning this time. Such is the bond of rugby and Naim! Cool

I don't know either exactly what time we're arriving.

One of the beauties of the game of Rugby Union is that it is a game that rewards opportunism. In the end, Tigers won because they took their opportunity and Exiles didn't (apart from the well-taken drop-goal by their Fullback straight from the kick-off return after 15 or 20 seconds!).

Perhaps it is a symptom of the game being a contest between two well-matched sides that it was hardly the most scintillating I have have ever been to.

The first half was, generally, one of probing. And Exiles had the best of it - all credit to them. For much of the first half Tigers, frankly, looked as if they had only just got out of bed. Lacklustre, static and riddled with handling errors. It certainly wasn't Vesty's best game of the season... Exiles were really pressuring and Tigers had to keep closing them down. I didn't see exactly why Jordan Crane was sin-binned as it was in the far corner from us, but probably something like repeat offence of handling in the ruck. The score of 3-3 at half-time did flatter Tigers.

At least in the second half they looked as if they had arrived! They succesfully weather the first 10 minutes with only 14 men, and produced a few excellent and threatening counter attacks, one of which really took Exiles by surprise and led to Crane redeeming himself by sneaking a Try, the conversion by Dupuy taking the score to 10-6. Exiles continued to threaten, but their threats were more effectively contained by Tigers; however, a massive boot from almost half way brought the score up to 10-9 from an Exiles' penalty, and set the game up for a nail-biting last couple of minutes.

For me, the thing that really sealed it for Tigers was (1) The fact that, unlike Tigers, Exiles hardly made use of substitutes (one I think) which would have given them a bit more edge in the last quarter (and there were definitely some tired legs, eg Catt played well but looked every bit his age by the end). And ultimately (2) With about 1 minute-something on the clock, and on the attack, Exiles booted the ball away for territory. Had they carried it forward and tempted Tigers into yet another penalty, they would have had a great chance for a last-minute 3-points which Tigers simply wouldn't have had time to answer.

Made us happy though... Smile

But Tigers will definitely have to up their game if they want to beat Leinster next week to secure the double.

I have now been able to see some match stats, and in fact Irish did make a number of substitutions - they certainly weren't all announced over the tannoy!

So in the end, Exiles chance to win it boils down to one thing really, from an attacking position kicking possession away with just over a minute to go...

And now, for all you WASPS fans especially...

Gotta say it wasn't the most exciting game of rugby I've seen in my life...Good seats though - half way line, lower tier but just enough height to see the whole action - Lots of Green shirts in the crowd! There was the occasional black & yellow and quartered shirts - And rugby watching women are much more interesting to look at than football women...Yep, definitely not the most dynamic rugby match I've been to!

I saw the highlights such as they were! I think perhaps only Tigers fans could have taken anything from that game! Irish were just wasteful in the first half, as James said, and should have made the most of their possession.

Hope you all enjoyed the day. At least it sounds as though you had some nice ladies to look at!

Afternoon gentlemen just got home from a great weekend. As you say a well matched pair of finalist`s, i did feel that if it were not for the tigers excellent defense the exiles would have notched up a decent tally of point`s having spent considerable time in our 5 yrd`s let alone our 22, so they have to sort their
sh!t out for next weekend or the result will go the other way. On a subject closley associated with rugby AHEM, drinking we could not find one decent pint of beer anywhere in twickenham and as for Young`s beer IMHO what a load of crap that is i went through their whole range of beer`s and they all tasted the same YUK !, You just can`t beat fuller`s ESB.
No prob`s JWM i have just read your email we left early to get to the hotel and get into the right mood, as you do Winker Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin
