Forum Rugby Club - new season, new thread
Posted by: JWM on 03 September 2008
Well boys, new season about to start. But let's think already about the end...
Just to keep you boys keen, let's pretend for a moment it might not be another Tigers v Wasps final, let's pretend that anyone could be in it, even Glaws...
Before long we'll have the chance to book ahead for seats (whoever's in the final). Forum Rugby Club day out at Twickers? Hifi morning. Beer. Rugby (a whole row together, around the half way line). More beer. Pie. (Or perhaps a corporate tailgate party? Mark?). More beer.
There's potential in this...

Well, we saw the good () and bad sides of Goode yesterday. Good - he scored some points, yeah! Bad, he missed some kicks, and not the hardest ones either. This latter trait of inconsistency in the big game is a flaw, one which did make Tigers (fans) fed up with him.
Being honest I wouldn't play him again. I think he is too ready with the boot and, you are right, was not very good with it.
As for the glory-hunting backs, again I think you are right James, as they are not passing to players in more opportune positions. Equally they are not committing defenders before playing the pass - another basic in my view - and just allow the defence to drift across and shut down the space.
Perhaps the line fever is due to how little they see of the ball (see slow recycling by the forwards) and all of these basics are down to the coaching team to drill into the players. Consistency of selection would help as this would give the players time to work each other out and not feel under such pressure to over-perform every time.
Maybe this is where Ireland and Wales' smaller pool of players to choose from is a distinct advantage as it sure breeds better teamwork through familiarity with each other and confidence in their (likely) selection.
These players all perform well in their club sides. That they forget the basics when in an England shirt must be a coaching issue in my view.

For all their faults, Scotland were still more imaginative than England yesterday. And Wales not as flawless as the hype - they'll certainly know they're in a match with Irealnd and France.
I think my money's on Ireland for the championship, and possibly the Grand Slam (I can only see Wales as a possible fly in the Irish ointment).
You didn't know I was Irish, did you...

I think they got bored and took their foot off the gas.
I think France and no Grand Slam this year.

Well the England v Wales game was a little better for England although they lost.
Defensively they were better and the breakdown was improved although still slow getting the ball back on our side.
They still seem to have no confidence to run the ball though and the few times they did actually looked as though they could be dangerous, outscoring Wales 2 tries to 1. Discipline is also still a big issue and they will not win games against the better sides until they sort this out.
It's time to stop thinking that they have better players now though. If you compare Wales position by position to England they are superior in almost every case. I've changed my mind, Wales will win the Grand Slam.

Always nice to do the double over the Tigers!
Shame we let them in for 2 bonus points at the end though.
I think we have left our run for the play offs too late even for us this time though.

I'm not saying anything about the present (though Tigers are doing remarkably well considering the tremendously unsettled situation with Coaches over the last 18months).
Now, here's a picture of when rugby players REALLY WERE rugby players!
All together now, "Deano, Deano..."
Just voted into the No8 berth of the Tigers Walk of Legends.

Allez les Bleus.
Great first half, but poor poor refereeing to let Shanklin stay on the pitch!

Thank goodness for that - the Welsh totally humiliated. Couldn't really happen to a better nation!

Part way through the weekend and
Another dull dull game from Scotland; and is it me or did the crowd sound like the stoning party from Life of Brian? Is the only way the Scots can have anywhere near a full house by giving free tickets to ne'er-do-wells (aka children)?
Wasps lose to Worcester - yeehah.
Gloucester beat Bath - expected, no comment needed.
Just a dull England game to come. Any likelihood of the IRA launching a tactical nuclear strike on the stadium and putting everyone out of their misery? Bonus if Sir Fred Goodwin is in attendance!

England are likely to improve with each game under Johnson. Still worth watching in my book.

Dull is being kind so far!

England have no brains. They have had opportunities and have wasted them by not offloading to the support when they have had a player over.
They are equally brainless for giving away penalties and conceding yellow cards.
Perhaps an iq test should be part of the selection process.
Only at the end did they show any intelligence at all - when it was too late.

Gave up long before the end!
The only entertainment was working out what (thick in the head) Martin Johnson was mouthing, whenever he was caught on camera. Assuming that the shots were random (yes I know they weren't) then his vocabulary during a match might be tedious.

Lack of discipline and knowledge of rules does for England yet again. Still would rather watch than not.

In huge contrast to yesterday's dreary Six Nations games, today's Premiership game between London Irish and Tigers was a stormer.
Probably because of all the southern hemisphere influence I'm thinking.

I'm off to Adams Park this afternoon to watch the mighty Wasps take on London Irish. I'm taking my 9 year old son and he is very excited by the prospect. If he really enjoys it I may enrol him with the mini Wasps!
Hopefully the game will be a bit more exciting than Wasps recent affairs which have been dull beyond belief. However, with Irish involved, that shouldn't be the case and I am looking forward to a really open game like the Exiles v Tigers the other week.
It's way too late for the Wasps charge to impact on the play offs now but at least we could achieve a modicum of respectability in our final position with a decent end of season push.

You probably won't see this before you set off, but have a great time! It's good to hear that your son is excited about the prospect of watching some great rugby ... and Wasps
After scoring a Powerline, mainsblock and extra Isoblue shelf yesterday, I was delighted to get home and find out that Tigers had stuffed Gloucester!
Where's old Flyfisher when you need him...

Haven't gone yet James as it's a 3.30pm kick off.
Oi!
Glad to hear about the Powerline James. I'm currently saving for mine.
