Forum Rugby Club - new season, new thread

Posted by: JWM on 03 September 2008

Well boys, new season about to start. But let's think already about the end...

Just to keep you boys keen, let's pretend for a moment it might not be another Tigers v Wasps final, let's pretend that anyone could be in it, even Glaws...

Before long we'll have the chance to book ahead for seats (whoever's in the final). Forum Rugby Club day out at Twickers? Hifi morning. Beer. Rugby (a whole row together, around the half way line). More beer. Pie. (Or perhaps a corporate tailgate party? Mark?). More beer.

There's potential in this...

Quite a lot of the ELVs recommended to go through, and as far as I understand them these are those that do add extra flow/excitement (on the whole) - eg regulations on kicks from passing back into the 22m, quick lineouts and 5m offside at scrums.

But collapsing the Maul and Lineout numbers thankfully seem to be toast. These haven't added to the game (supposedly the point of the ELVs) so I'll be delighted if they don't go through - forward offensive play has been really hampered and a hallmark part of rugby UNION was in real jeopardy.

I would have also liked to see the lineout pre-gripping also ditched, as it doesn't seem particularly to add to safety and tends to make lineouts a bit predictable.

Most of the support for the full ELVs (incl the almost all infringements penalised by freekick being trialled by Super14 ... ping pong yawn) seem to come from Southern Hemisphere people, who seem determined to turn Rugby UNION into Rugby LEAGUE. (I have nothing against RL, I stress, but they are different games.)

22-14 to Bath. Another defeat. This is really not a good season for Wasps.

Yes, on reflection, even Bath overhauling Tigers to go top is not as bad as saying, "C'mon you Wasps". I'll wash my mouth out.

Listen you Tigers. Because you've had so many beatings from us in finals at Twickenham over the years we thought we'd give you a break by allowing you to play someone else there.

We are told it's not much fun having to lose at HQ and as you do it so often we feel sorry even for you!

Normally I am one of those southern hemisphere fans who want to speed up the game and find the north's resistance to change frustrating but I must admit they were right on the ELVs. Having watched lots of S14 games, they do seem to have loss the texture of the game and have become more bland and "League like" There were definite improvements from some rules like the 22 kicking rule and 5m gain line rule and these have sensibly been retained.

Now, if we can reduce the value of the drop goal....

I agree. League is one dimensional. Union is a more dynamic, more complex, multi-layered game.

Attempts to speed it up smack of American type, short attention span sporting ideals, where the subtleties of the game are unappreciated.

Oh dear! Just because Julian White got sent off for chinning Sheridan? Tigers were lucky not to get a yellow card along with the penalty under the posts near the end so I don't see how Wayne Barnes was 'playing for Sale'.

Still it was a great game to watch and Tigers deserved the victory, playing as they did with 14 men for most of the game and in a very positive manner. Most unlike the Tigers from earlier in the season.

sale were holding the ball on several occasions and from the game i was listening to should have lost by a long chalk if it was not for the ref [ white gave one punch sheriden gave two and was not penalised ]
