Stylus Cleaning

Can anyone recommend a brush or alternative for cleaning the stylus on a turntable?

My dealer here in the States, also an acknowledged LP12 "guru", gave me a supply of green strips. "After every few sides of a record" was the recommendation.
He also just recommended the Akiva to me

The green strip seem to be getting a few votes. Is there a recommended methodology for using the green strip?
Kind regards

Well I have the sound on with the volume turned low so I can hear the green paper making contact with the stylus and avoid pushing up too hard.
Then pull the paper across the stylus OBVIOUSLY from the rear towards the front.
Since I have a 'naked' design cartridge which makes it easy to do, I tend to do a few strokes at a slight left angle of contact and a few at a slight right angle of contact between the paper surface and the stylus tip.
Then finish off with a gentle sweep with a camel hair brush

I was told to slightly tilt the paper at a 45 degree angle and pull it FROM THE BACK FORWARD on the right side and then on the left side of the stylus

How true... how true
I "did" forget to mention to keep the volume on though

PS if you have been reading - I did not get the chance to demo the Dynavector - a little creative financing pushed me to the Akiva (after the demo naturally).

....I have been reading the marathon a bit and saw you were now an Akiva man.quote:PS if you have been reading - I did not get the chance to demo the Dynavector - a little creative financing pushed me to the Akiva (after the demo naturally).
I have never demoed an Akiva but then it is not a common choice for an Orbe....I am sure it is as good in it's own way as a Dynavector and obviously synergistic with the LP12.

You're not supposed to angle the green paper at all! You're not "sanding" the dirt off your stylus edges, you're mearly vibrating the debris off.
A 2" piece of green paper, hold one end and draw it backwards along the stylus in a straight line. Do this at the opposite end of the paper and it'll take care of the pressure exerted on the stylus tip.

Is that so you can hear the dirt coming off?

OH.....I thought you were also removing the 'lacquer' that forms on the stylus due to the heat effect from contact with the vinyl groove which I don't expect would vibrate offquote:You're not supposed to angle the green paper at all! Count are you saying pull from the front of the stylus towards the back of the cartridge body. That sounds prety hairy to me.quote:....draw it backwards along the stylus in a straight line.
....Nah it's to make up for my poor eyesight.quote:Originally posted by Rob B:quote:I "did" forget to mention to keep the volume on though

This is where a Signet/Audio Technica vibrating stylus cleaner comes in handy.

Are you using green paper on your Akiva?

Gregg.
Yeah.
In the beginning I was concerned ( there are ppl. who told me not to use it ) but since Dave showed me how and assured me it will NOT damage the tip, I've been using it ever since.
It makes sense. The paper is softer than the diamond.
I think that most screw ups comes from a user error.
Just started to use on the Miyabi, too.
Now I just have to get used to the Signet thing. ( this is also Linn approved )

Well I have been lucky then - 4 years of using it on my Adikt and Argo have caused no damage so far. Lets hope the string continues with the Akiva

Gregg
PS At least if I screw up the Akiva there is a generous trade in offer towards a replacement!

I have written here praising the 3M imperial lapping paper green, before.
Incidentally DO NOT use it at an angle on the left or right side of the stylus, that is if you want to keep the stylus STRAIGHT that is.
From back to front BELOW only.
happy listenoing

I'm saying the direction you pull the green paper is from the arm pivot point to the end of the cartridge. You'd have to be pretty thick to pull/push/side it in any other direction.
