Redeeming features of your home town ?
Posted by: DIL on 28 April 2006
Simple enough question.
If you look past the traffic jams, useless public transport, centres of education that don't, chav estates, local politicians that look out only for no. 1, lack of decent music outlets, etc. etc., what redeeming features does your home town have ?
For my part, I live in a small (by UK standards) town of ca 60k inhabitants in the north of Sweden. The town itself is typical Swedish small town, same selection of shops as in all other Swedish small towns. All in all, pretty uninspiring. However, LuleƄ is at the mouth of a river and the various beaches and waterfronts make the place quite pleasent. The town is also pretty compact, and flat, which means that getting around by bike in the summer is a doddle, and you don't have to stress, even in the car. No where is more than 10 min from anywhere else !
I guess that there are worse places to live, but that even these have their plus points. Over to you...

For my sins I was born in Heston, Middlesex. I believe Jimmy Page was also born there and rumour is Ritchie Blackmore went to school there. However, I stand to be corrected...

I used to be a frequent visitor to Heston swimming baths when I was a kid and played a lot of football over on Norwood Green.
I never met Page or Blackmore, though.
Ah, memories!

Nothing wrong with Northumberland, but do not tell everyone what a wonderful unspoilt area it is! Embleton last year with the kids.

We should all retain an element of childishness in our make up

I was joking
we stay at a friends cottage in Craster which has a loverly walk along to Dunstanburgh Castle (behind you on photo). My wife had lived all her life in Alnwick till I dragged her South to Durham. We still spend a lot of time there. Did you go to Newton by the Sea? thats very beautiful and is less than a mile North (walking along the beach that is) from where you are standing with the kids. It also has a crackin child friendly pub in corner of the green. Trying to hire a cottage there is like looking for hen's teeth.

The Ship at Newton is an all time favourite location, summer or winter. The walk along the beach is fantastic. Fortunately some friends of ours have a holiday cottage at Dunstan Steads, about 300 metres from the beach and a mile and a half from Newton so we have a regular excuse to go. In fact we are staying there at half term.
This is the lovely view from their lounge window over the golf course down towards the sea.

Diccus,
Our friends' cottage is listed with an agency, mainly by virtue of the fact that the previous owners had it listed. They do not see it as a commercial venture, because they do not need the money, and I suspect they will take it off the agency books soon. They bought it because they love the area, and tend to book it out for the use of friends and relatives only. The details of the web site are listed below. If you are interested I will pass your details on personally. The Black Sheep is indeed excellent as are generally the other guest ales.

I was born in Stourbridge but left when I was seven, been back fantastic people depressing place.
I then lived in Southport near Liverpool from 7 until I was old enough to escape! Nice place but the people?
I now live in Sydney which some might say is an intricate and complicated mix of Southport and Stourbridge.................Well it isn't.
