The Young Knives - Voices of Animals and Men. HIFI+

Posted by: Alan Paterson on 20 January 2007

Just read the new copy of HIFI+ where they have reviewed the new album from The Young Knives. I first heard this band in the summer and saw then live in Newcastle and Glasgow. If you like the review in the mag then get the album, it is last years best album for me.

If there are any members that are going to see them in Glasgow (March i think it is,i haven't got the ticket to hand) give me a shout asi will be there.

Hi, I bought this recently and think it is absolutley awful! For me it is nowhere near the best of 2006, the key artists for me of last year were Richard Hawley, Arctic Monkeys, Joan as A Policewomen and Amy Winehouse. I really expected to hate the Amy Winehouse record (Back to Black) but I think it is a classic. Anyway that is a whole other thread, so sorry for the hijack!

Must agree The Arctic Monkeys are excellent along with Amy Winehouse. Give the knives another try though lol.
I saw The View last year and their album was released on Monday i believe. I will have to get a hold of that. Also Just Jack's album is just out too i think. Another band releasing an album shortly are bloc party. I hope it will be as good as their first.

Never heard of Joan as a Policewomen, will have to look that up.

I believe her actual name is Joan Wasser, she has a wonderful and distictive voice. I just found the Young Knives a bit juvenile, I will give it another listen, but to be honest, I found it a rather embarrassing record.

Nobody else a Young Knives fan?

Yep, I'm a massive massive Young Knives fan. I'm also their forum moderator Smile

Henry, House and Ollie are 3 of the nicest blokes you'd ever wish to meet.

If there's anything you need to know etc .. give me a shout.

Ken.

Posted on: 13 March 2007 by Ken.W
A heck of a lot from the Transgressive stable .. the Foals .. Shins .. that type of stuff mostly.
Posted on: 13 March 2007 by Alan Paterson
Are you connected with Transgressive?
Posted on: 15 March 2007 by Ken.W

I'm having a hard time liking the Arctic Monkeys. They sound like a half arsed Supergrass from 12 years ago. I must be getting old. I do want to check out Ms Winehouse though. I've heard many good things. She was a "must see" during SXSW.

I'll second this one as well - quite a disapointment after all this buzz & fuzz they have had. I just don't get it. As speaking of Supergrass i think that first Cribs record has this kind of feeling as 1st Supergrass - at least it reminded me that i am not that old fart...

Cheers, Daniel.

I think the Arctic Monkeys album is great. Looking forward to hearing the new album. Going to go listen to the first supergrass album shortly to listen for similarities.
Both of Amy Winehouse's album are excellent imo. None of the other female artists that have appeared in the last few years can touch her.

By chance I picked up both the Young Knives and The View on vinyl in HMV Leicester Sq last week.

I think the View are great, catchy indie band, not the most profound band ever but more enjoyable for it.

The Knives seem a bit shouty on first listen, but I am getting into them, I think some fo the songs at least will be growers.

I think the Arctics are great, particularly the lyrics. "Her name isnt Rio, but I dont care for Sand" makes me smile every time.

My wife bought Winehouse, and again I did not wnat to like it but I do. I cant quite work out if her voice is just a parody of the old jazz singers or not. Its almost like she is not a great singer, but she has a cool voice, if that maks any sense. Anyway she has more balls than most indie types, and I am sure shew will do well.

If you like the Young Knives, then give Larrikin Love a try. Very ska in places but not bad all the same.

They were supporting The Zutons when i saw them last year but didn't pay them much attention then. Heard a couple of tracks a while back and thought they were ok, will need to give them a serious listen.
