Best places on the net to buy CDs?

Posted by: Top Cat on 14 March 2002

Hi folks.

I've a few (relatively obscure) CDs I want to buy, and I'd rather get them on the 'net. Any recommended sites (other than Amazon) - junk like cdnow.com and 101cd.com are so woefully out of touch with my music, and I don't know many others...

... yes seriously. They claim to have every current cd available in the UK (and cheaper than Amazon as well).

As an added bonus, every time I buy something from them I seem to get someone elses order (so far I've had a Robbie Williams cd - well the wife likes it), Chocolat on video, the complete Cold Feet series 1.

Good luck.

Amazon 3 CDs for £20

Some real obscure stuff, really.

I know Amazon do some of this, but it's not that much cheaper than full-price.

Miranda Sex Garden: "Suspiria", "Madra" and "Fairytales..."

Corduroy: Live, 1994

Frank Zappa: "Apostrophe" and "One Size Fits All" (audiophile gold releases, as I have the originals on vinyl and CD already, but fancy the better mastered gold CDs)

and things of that kind of eclectic ilk...

ABMusic.ca has a very good selection of Zappa, I got apostrophe from there the other month, not any fancy gold edition though.

Although I may sound rude, make sure after typing in say zappa in amazon you scroll down, I only say this because it took me a week to twig, I thought the only stuff on offer was the first five!

Seagull, thanks for the tescos link.

I have just ordered a Baby Mammoth CD: (electronica, seriously good the one I have got), Jewel (her latest) and Muddy Waters, Folk Singer, (have no idea on this one.)

each CD was £1 cheaper than amazon and deliver is cheaper too.

Damn this online ordering, I can't afford it, make me stop.

I have no idea if this would help with UK sites, but with the US sites I use (allmusic.com and insound.com, both of which have enormous catalogues btw) I do a Google search for "coupons" just before I order. That is, I'll go to Google, search on "insound coupon" (e.g.), and promptly get some codes, which I then enter into the "Coupon Code" box on the music site, and which usually gives my a prompt 10-20% off. Easy.

Even with shipping, the exchange with the Canadian peso makes it worthwhile...check this out, a small indy I shop at...
http://www.birdmansound.com/birdnest.htm, some great indy stuff and decent prices to boot.
BTW...if you want to hear great indy music try a local university station http://www.ckcufm.com/ and check out guys like John Westhaver and Dave Ardvaaks' shows

I read in the Gramophone [letters page] that
some Australian online CD shops are very good
value. Anyone know some addresses ?

Here's a couple of New Zealand sites you could give a try - CD's are gloriously cheap here!

Don't be put off by the hybrid Spanish/English presentation. They have recently set up in the UK and haven't got around to completely translating their site yet. I've bought off them a few times and have been completely satisfied

I just ordered a couple of titles from them, we'll see how it goes. They had Lambchop's Nixon Cd for 11€05. I've been looking for some titles in the Warners Remasters series, They have those too at reasonable prices.

I've noticed that the 'search' option only works in spanish.

Hi Top Cat
I, like you like the prices on 101 and CDWOW but find their stock woefully limited. The best stockist that I have found is actually, www.tower.co.uk. They almost always have what I am looking for. The other great thing is that that site also links to their USA site. You get to choose to buy it from their UK site or USA site (USA is often cheaper but postage is more). You also get to see stuff that is not on sale in UK.
I think that we should support outfits like Tower whose stock goes well beyond the Top75 stuff.
Anyway happy hunting

For the widest range of all try

http://www.gemm.com/

it is mostly second hand, but hey! when you are desparate for 'Gashing the old Mae Weat' to fill in that gap in the Severed Heads part of the record rack, what can you do ?
