Why extra NAP150 for DTS?

Posted by: crsm on 09 September 2006

I hope this isn't a daft question..... If I get an AV2 and a NAPV175 to add to my existing stereo then why do I need an additional NAPV150 for DTS use?

It would help if we knew what the rest of your system is? In theory though, if you have an existing 2 channel setup, then you dont need another 150 - unless you intend 7.1?

Hi Steve, here's more info: at the moment I have a Rotel RSP976 processor with outputs to a Rotel RMB1075 5-channel power amp which I use to drive centre and rear speakers. I have a NAC102 and NAP 180 which I use for music (vinyl + cd) and for the front speakers of my a/v setup. I am planning to move to the AV2/NAPV175/DVD5 but I only want a 5.1 system. I understood that DTS was 5.1 so why would I need the NAPV150?

Cheers!

Richard,
You wouldn't need a 150, as you already have a 2 channel amp and are thinking about getting a 175 - the three channel amp.
You would connect the AV2 direct to the 175, and the front L & R would be taken care of by your 180.

I honestly dont know if the 102 has 'unity gain' - the way in which the AV2 acts as master volume controle. If it doesn't it's not a problem as you then set the 102 to an easily rememberable volume (most use 12 o'clock) and set up system balance from there. All this should, of course, be done by your dealer - or at the very least explained to you in detail. (Hint, get yourself a sound level meter - indespensible for setting up speakers correctly in surround)

Who said you need the 150? or are you reading the Naim instruction manual - which sort of presumes you have just purchased an entire setup?

My 175 works in conjunction with a 250 without any problems.

Steve,
Thanks for the info. It was actually the Naim blurb about the AV2 which said an extra NAP150 was needed for DTS.
As I'm also thinking of getting the DVD5 can you tell me if it is multi-region?
You're probably wondering why I don't pop along to my local dealer to ask these questions, well, I live in Belgium.....

The standard 102 does not have unity gain on the AV input but a quick trip back to Naim HQ and they can sort it out.

crsm,

the extra NAP150 is needed for full DTS ES capability, i.e., 7.1 channels...

For standard DTS then you only need amplification for 5.1 channels.

Thanks everyone for your expertise.

Now all I need to decide is which projector or big tv to go for.

Cheers!
