New System

Posted by: ted on 16 December 2002

I now have a 102, hi (recapped) ,pse, Cdx, 250 (recapped). Monitor audio studio 20's. My old system, 72,hi, cd3, 140, same speakers. The new one seems more forward and more harsh (piano in particular espesically at higer volumnes) ,very detailed but the old one was more mellow and more listenable. Any ideas, a nac 82 ? Thanks Ted.

How long ago were your units refurbished? Sometimes it takes well over a month for things to start to sound right again.

Also I don't seen to have as much bass as I used to, tighter, maybe, but not as much as before. Thanks ted

Well, pretty much rules out the 250! Still, you say it's a "new" system, so there could very well be break-in/set up issues.
My first listen to a 102 was a horrific experience, almost exactly what you describe as the negatives you're experiencing. Eventually I heard one that had been powered up and run for a good while and I could not believe it was the same preamp.
And my experiences with power supplies has not been what I read on this fourm. Each time I put one in my system everything went retrograde for awhile. A newly refurbished hi took almost two months to show itself to be an improvement. The good news is that it was a big step up. It just seemed to break-in begrudginly.

are you using the "optional" power supply on the 102?

Useing the pse that came with it and the newly recapped hi cap, done by nana.

How long have you had the combination up and running? How have you installed it? Is the napsc far away as possible from everything else? Did you buy 2nd hand or ex dem from a dealer?

Sounds like the 72 is better than the 102!

(just kidding folks!)

Sounds like a setup issue to me, or the 72 is better than the 102 AND the CDX is better than the CD3. I never thought the CD3 was mellow....

What's the room like? Where are the speakers? The equipment? what stand, if any, are you using? are the boxes level? are the plugs plugged in right? I sthe hicap installed right? It's relatively easy to make small error with big impact.

It all started after the hicap was recapped and I had my dealer make my naim 5 wire to single with f connectors to the sudio 20's, not the bi wire like I had for many years with the 72,old hi, 140, cd3. When I first got the (1999) 102 it sounded great with the nap 250, CD3, and old hi. Then two days later the hi went south (big time). Then I had it recapped. In the meantime I got a 1999 CDX and had the speaker wires changed to single wire. All looks well as I have had Naim stuff for many years. The same wallmount shelfs I have had for years. Maybe the hi needs more time (1 month now powered on). I don't know

Oh the napse is on the floor about 5 feet from the 102, Thanks Ted.
