Best and worst top tens
Posted by: jcs_smith on 06 November 2006
Reading through the top 15 albums post I was struck by how some of the posts listed records I would rather die than listen to. So just for fun, and not to demean anyone’s taste but just to show the truth of the proverb One man’s meat is another man’s poison, how about a best and worst top 10. As a reference mine for today would be (and please don’t get these mixed up:
Best 10
1. Prince Far-I and the Arabs – Cry tuff dub encounter chapter 3
2. Bill Laswell – City of Light
3. Pete Namlook and Klaus Schulze – Dark Side of the Moog VII
4. Dub Syndicate and Akabu – Live at the Town and Country
5. Ed Rush and Optical – The Creeps
6. Last Exit – Last Exit
7. Gary Clail’s Tackhead Sound System – Tackhead Tape Time
8. Miles Davis – On the corner
9. Karlheinz Stockhausen – Hymnen
10. Phillip Glass – Akhnaten
Worst 10
1. Yes – Tales of topographical Oceans
2. Genesis – Wind and Wuthering
3. China Crisis – anything by them
4. Coldplay – Anything by them
5. Radiohead – Anything by them
6. Emerson Lake and Palmer – Brain Salad Surgery
7. David Gray – Anything by him
8. Chris De Burgh – Anything by him
9. Magma – Anything by them
10. Katie Melua – 9 million bicycles or whatever that crap’s called.
Amazingly the worst 10 is a lot more difficult to list than you would imagine. Give it a go.

My top 10 has been listed several times so it is easiest just to say any 10 HMHB albums or any 10 Shirley Collins or any 10 from the Psych/Prog/Folk thread or the complete works of Leos Janacek. Quite like Prog-Punk like the Strangles, Clash, TV Personalities, Monochrome Set and, of course, the Desperate Bicycles.
My worst 10 is more difficult but would definitely include Phil Collins entire catalogue, most (though not all) soul music, most (no make that all) rap and Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. Like you JCS. I'm not keen on Coldplay or Radiohead. I don't like music made up from samples of other pieces of music with somebody mumbling some street nonsense over the top. Oh and I am none too fond of Madonna, Kylie and that kind of stuff. And lastly I don't like dance music - if somebody starts dancing: I always think time to put on the Thomas Tallis. I'm against all forms of clubbing as it is very cruel on the seals.
But when it comes down to it, my motto is
Give me Love, give me Can, give me Meatloaf
Give me Rush, give me Marquee Moon
Michael Ball or The Fall, I could listen to them all
In the twilight of the afternoon
Irk the purists, irk the purists, irk the purists its a right good laugh
Irk the purists, irk the purists, irk the purists at the back
Hall & Oates, Napalm Death, Miles Davis
Patti Smith, Simply Red, Sly Stone
Be they false or 4Real, I don't care and nor does Neil
So long as we can hear their songs
Irk the purists, irk the purists, it could well be an olympic sport
Irk the purists, irk the purists, if you've never then you ought
[break sung to Agadoo]
Husker Du Du Du, Captain Beefheart, ELO
Chris de Burgh, Sun Ra, Del Amitri, John Coltrane
Irk the purists, irk the purists, come on boy you know it feels so right
Irk the purists, irk the purists, irk the purists tonight
Rotf
PS - Does anybody remember Alexi Sayle's Stuff where he walked about a music hall of fame and said how the music business was tragic - Jimi Hendrix: Dead, Jim Morrison: Dead, Janis Joplin: Dead, Phil Collins: Still Alive.

That is indeed a very fine and well chosen list. I had the great misfortune to be forcibly reacquainted with ELP recently, and it was even worse than I recall from 30 years ago, before I grew up. I do have a soft spot for Yes though. But one is missing - Queen - the worst band ever in my view.

That's a fair post, Nigel - I do seem to recall you enjoyed Yes more than you thought you would!

Welcome back my friend to the thread that never ends. I just landed on Planet ProgRock and heard three tribute bands
HELP,
Son of PFM and
I Can't Believe It's Not Focus. For my sins I still like them all (the real thing, not the tribute bands).
Agree with you about Queen, but why did John Lydon sing
God Save The Queen? Was he a secret fan?

Apart from your numbers 8 and 10 I really know spectacularly little about your top 10.
I'd appreciate you expanding on it with a little description or mini review of them.

Dear Fred
Anything my sister loved in the late 70's (their heyday) I made up my mind to dislike, on principle.
